Sure, but you're looking at Eldritch Blast as though it were your only option. You've got wands of color spray for little things that want to melee, you've eventually got chilling tentacles to take out whole rooms full of small monsters, you've got area attack blast shape invocations, you've got swarms... and so on. Eldritch Blast is great against low to moderate touch ACs, and that's all.
