Warlock Implement + Light Shield?

Do you use your implement "to attack"?
Or, do you merely need it "wielded" to gain the bonus? (pg 131, warlock desc)

Light shields let you hold an item in the shield hand, but not attack with it.

I was wondering if this is clarified anywhere... thanks!

Yes, the implement is used for attacking, not merely wielded. (Holy symbols are an exception, though.)

When the books use the word "wield", they mean that the item so held is actually actively applied to the attack and is integral to any actions used in the attack.

This can be seen in the context of the uses and it is consistent with the sense of the word as found in the Oxford English Dictionary of having an object not simply in possession but in one's control, under one's will, and other meanings of intension and purpose.

No. Using an implement to gain its bonuses is considered attacking with that implement. If you wield a light shield and hold an implement in the same hand, you would not get the implement enhancement bonus to your powers, but you would still benefit from any property that the implement has

However, you can do this:

Pick up light shield proficiency as a feat and use the shield at 1st or 2nd level. You don't HAVE to have a wand to use yours powers, you just don't get a bonus from it (which you don't when its nonmagical anyway).

Once you pick up a magic wand, retrain your feat to something else and drop the shield.

Aside from the wizard's staff implement there is no reason you can't use an implement with a shield as the remainder are one handed. The shield is on the off hand and the implement is in your on hand.

Yes. Although, as long as you're willing to give up opportunity attacks, there's no reason you couldn't use a rod with a shield, either.

And unless your some rare high strength warlock I don't think anyone is going to be too scared of your AoO's anyway. Granted you need 13 strength to even use a light shield, but that is still is likely to make for a feeble basic attack.

Yeah. I'd have a hard time imagining a Warlock getting excited about taking an AoO.
