Warmachine: comparisons to Warhammer/40k?

I have recently looked into the Warmachine rules & miniatures by Privateer Press. I have played Warhammer and Warhammer 40k in the past, but I am interested in learning more about Warmachine, with an eye towards playing a few games and purchasing product.

Does anyone have experiences to share about Warmachine? What they like, don't like, and perhaps how it compares to Warhammer/40k? Any recommendations for getting into the rules and minis?

Thanks in advance!

There is really not a whole lot the same between 40k & Wamachine.

Warmachine is more of a skirmish game. You might have 5-20 minis in an army.

Warmachine I more cinimatic. You can pick up stuff and throw it,headlocks, arm locks, and ram. minis in the same faction will have some combo synergy. WM is easier to learn and less expensive to get into . There is a constan stream of new stuff coming out so there is always soemthing new to try out.

Check out the forums, but be warned that there's some hate for GW there. A lot of the players were driven to it by the prices and practices of GW, it seems.

I don't know about the system, myself, not being a wargamer, but I love the setting and the models are really cool

I believe the fast play rules are available for download on the site, as well as a bunch of setting info and extensive galleries of models and concept art. Have fun!

Yeah. It is rather sad - GW finally gets back to versions of their games where I like the rules and would be willing to play, while at the same time raising their prices to where I would be unwilling to buy from them. :(

WARMACHINE is a fast game, no matter how tough a 'jack is it can be destroyed by a few great hits. I am currently playing Cygnar, and having a great deal of fun. I just added some *ZAP* to my army in the form of Storm knights, a storm clad, and Commander Nemo! (I always say his name like that, he is so very much a mad scientist. :))

I've never played Warhammer, so I really can't offer any comparisons. I will say that Privateer Press has done a fantastic job with Warmachine (and, I should add, the entire Iron Kingdoms line). You can build a competitive army for ~$100, which I understand is a lot cheaper than Warhammer. The minis are high quality, the rules are fast to learn, and the campaign books are stunningly beautiful.

They have this philosophy which I really respect, namely: your minis are never obsolete. They've made a point of never saying "you can't play this now" or "hey here's the new warcaster which is better than the previous warcaster in every way".

If I had to pick a negative quality to the game, it's that Privateer appears very burdened trying to meet demand on the minis. They recently pushed releases back about a whole quarter to try and catch up with their new facilities.

Should you be interested in testing the game cheaply, there are these starter kits called Battleboxes. There's one for each faction and they contain quickstart rules, a warcaster, and some warjacks. I forget the retail on them, believe it was ~$30 on ebay.

Oh and if you're a Warhammer player, you might be interested in the new Hordes game they're releasing. It's a parallel minis game set in the Iron Kingdoms world with more of a fantasy creature skirmish bent. It should be launching early 2006.
