Was I wrong?

So, is this an entirely new campaign, or does it pick up directly after the TPK?

It's an entirely new campaign.

Also, just a note for those who said that one player's choice dictated the choices of the other two or that the player had a religion forced upon him. When the players and I were discussing new campaigns, the one involving the Triad (Tyr, Torm and Ilmater) was actually one of three campaign ideas I pitched, and it only came about because one player, while looking through my FR books, commented that he might like to play a Justiciar of Tyr. I just researched it a bit and found a link to two other churches. Everyone agreed that the Triad sounded interesting and they wanted to try it. Player 3 even said he didn't mind having Ilmater for his patron diety.

As other people have said, I think what he really wanted to play was a spiked chain fighter, and he figured he could shoehorn it into any campaign we played. His rationale for how he fit into the church of Ilmater, however, wasn't a good one IMO, but I was worried that if I interfered in this player's background, I'd piss off two people: Player 3 because he couldn't play the character he wanted and Player 1 because I would be "too controlling" again. In the interest of game harmony, I let him have his character, but the more I thought about it, the more it bothered me; I wished I had done something, but I was still worried about being seen as "too controlling." So instead, I wanted to see what you good people had to say about the situation.

Well, by RAW he can't have Jotunbrund (just like I said it) so toerh than that, a spiked chain fighter isn't THAT big of a detial. Just say "no" to Jotunbrund, and leave it be. You would not be "controlling", you be following RAW. It's simple, really.

And all it souds like is that you had an idea for a campaign from some talking (and looking) around and ran with it. Good for you :)

Which is more problematic to you: the spiked chain as a weapon or the concept of the character not fitting Ilmater?

If it's the first, just try it out. I've seen the threads on the weapon, and compared to my experiences the weapon is good, but it's not that good ("Youh win TEH D&D!!!111!!" - good as most threads imply ). If it's the latter, you could try to pitch some ideas to the player to "Ilmaterize" his PC. Like those ideas about flagellants seen on this thread.
