Was Paladin a Paladin?

I mean the character Paladin, of Have Gun--Will Travel. He travels around righting wrongs, but he does work for money and he does do, uh, extra-legal justice.

What do you think, fans of 1950s TV?

Paladin tended to work for traditional justice and was clearly about right wrongs. I would be surprised to find that the character did not factor into the paladin class. Not astonished, mind you, but surprised.

Well, there were a couple of things that made me think of it as a viable question.

First, he has a Chinese lackey who goes by the name, "Heyboy". Granted, the character seems to enjoy that moniker, but you've got to figure that he's also got, you know, an actual name. (Oh, the 1950s...)

Second, he kisses a maid forcibly after she threatens his life, then smacks her rear as she's leaving the room.

Third, while he's courtly with some upper-class women, there is also the suggestion that he engages in premarital relations with some, such as June Lockheart's lonely doctor.

Fourth, he's not embedded in any hierarchy. He's not in a church. He's not in the military. He's the lone employee of his business.

Fifth, he seems to have mad skills: knowledge, bluff, intimidate, gather information, search, etc.

Sixth, he doesn't report all crimes to the relevant authorities.

In short, he strikes me as a Rogue, not a Paladin.

Most importantly, does he have a Pokemotorcar?

Also, does he lay on hands. . . oh wait, you covered that.

Take a bullet like a, um, Paladin?

Maybe he's a ranger with a horse animal companion and a Favored Enemy of humans. ;)

I've never actually seen him get shot, after 2 discs. Knocked out, yes. Shot, no. Dodge, maybe?

Where is it writen that a paladin can't engage in premartial relations?

Where is it written that he has to belong to some kind of hiearchy? Lancelot was clearly a paladin before joining the Round Table, unless you consider his knighthoodedness part of a hiearchy.

Those mad skills would be helpful to someone combatting eviil...

Why would he have to report the crimes? He would be the one dealing with the destruction of evil.

Paladin

Not seen that, but I have seen gunman heroes with a "Knight Errant" flavour: Jon Shannow, tthe Jerusalem Man (David Gemmell's Stones of Power series) Roland (Stephen King's Dark Tower series) They were a lot like this guy sounds. Lawful Good doen't always mean nice, or respecting of authority if it is corrupt.

I can certainly see grimmer, meaner Good Guys (there was a thread a while back on the darker Paladin) who haven't quite crossed the line into Unaligned.
