Was there only one DM at your table?

Did your 1e group include only 1 person who had DMing experience?

  • Yes. My group included only one person who had DMing experience

  • No, my group included at least 2 people who had DMing experience.

The DMing role pretty much rotated among the participants. Basically, most of the players at the table at any given point in time had either DMed in the past, or were planning on DMing sometime in the near future. It was a rare player who had no interest in taking the DM chair.

Ditto. Same situation now as then.

Back in the day I think about half of my gaming group of the time did DMing at some point. There was a group of 4 that did a lot of DMing, another 3 or so that did a little bit, and the rest of the group (which at one time was 15 strong) felt that DMing was not their thing.

I voted "No," because I've had players who gave DMing at shot, at one time or another. However, the vast majority of the players in my games never DM. That was true when 1E ruled the earth, and it's still true, today.

True for you maybe.

For me, the vast majority of players I've gamed with have DM'd at some point or other. In my current group of seven players, six of us have DM'd. All but two of us are complete strangers, so, it's not like we learned together.

I'm actually quite surprised that there is such a large segment that had only one person in a group who ever DM'd. I don't mean DM'd for your particular group, I mean, DM'd ever. If someone DM's in another group but plays in yours, that would count as a "yes" vote.

If they DM'ed the same system or similar, yes. But if someone in my group has never run AD+D but runs a mean game of GURPS I'd vote no; their GURPS experience hasn't taught them the rules and intricacies of AD+D.

Back in 1991 I learned 1st edition from a then best friend. I was the only player in the group. But we had fun anyway.

Before long I had ideas for a world of my own and made photocopies of his books. I shot ideas off of my friend, and he said I had the makings of a great DM. So I started DMing stuff for him. Eventually his world and mine had portals connecting them.

I wanted to broaden my ideas and sought to buy my own books, thats whaen I found out that there was a second edition.
