The Way of the New Science is a class splatbook for Deadlands d20, devoted to the Mad Scientist class (basically, they build weird gizmos - think the Doc from Back to the Future and you've got a good idea). It's $15, 64 pages, and has the cheap quality, recycled art, and large margins that we've come to know and love in Deadlands d20 products.

The book starts off with a lot of fluff. A 3 page intro story, several pages of art and titles, then the history of Dr. Hellstromme and mad scientists in general. All in all, this takes up the first 20 pages of the book (or around 1/3 of it in total).

The next 15 pages are mostly new rules. First are some expanded rules on a mad scientist making new gizmos. It's a bit fuzzy, compared to say something like Traveller d20, but the rules work fairly well, and there's a section on making exlixirs (basically like potions).

There's also a new class, the Smoker. It calls it a prestige class, except it's presented in the form of a core class (ie, 20 levels, you can start as one at 1st level). Seems an odd class - basically they are mad scientists who specialize in making potions and smoking drugs (thus the name). It's got a really screwed up Base Attack Bonus. Not only does it start off at +1 and end up at +19 at 20th level (which is something I find annoying but I can stand), the third attack bonus is at -6 from the 2nd attack, as opposed to the more usual -5. It also doesn't seem like they explain some of the class abilities. I suspect the author must have been smoking something when he came up with this class.

After this are 15 pages of new equipment - gizmos and elixirs.

The last 15 pages or so is info for the GM. Background on the Deadlands universe, including several new 'secret' inventions and such. Also some new relics.

All in all, a pretty mixed bag. Most of the book is okay (if nothing else, lots of gadgets), but the amount of fluff is annoying, and the new class is just a joke. C-
