(Way OT) How bad is the heat wave in Europe?

I live in Washington on the West Coast. We had a very mild winter and are having a very, uncomfortably hot summer. Luckily September will be here soon and hopefully it cools down.

I was wondering if a native american could please post detailed instructions of a rain dance, i would like to perform one...

I'm one of those people who has only black in his closset (i'm no goth thank you very much), and i am still wearing long pants and a longsleeved shirt (rolled up above the elbows). Have to give the wageslaves what they expect to see ;-)

The Metro feels like a frikin microwave, especially when they turn on the heaters to max and then break the damn things so we were stuck with them all day at max settings.

The place i work at is one of those glass monstrosities, we do have decent airco, but for some rason our office is the only place in the entire building where the airco isn't working, last time i checked it was 24 degrees C, that's about my limit, when it gets to 25C i generally pack up and move to the server room where it's a constant 15C (Hmm...).

I'm now sitting at home in the kitchen, on the right of me an open door to the balcony, on the left a large fan that's running at high speed...

I want my cold weather back, wheee!!!

I think I just found my long lost twin. There is one white T-Shirt in my wardrobe. And one I've worn it for one day, I have to wash it, don't I?

I want a Control Weather spell. Or at the very least, Protection from the Elements.

It's awful. Fortunately, I live in an old (as in, 3-century-old) house, and back in these time they build houses with 1/2 meter thick walls, tiny windows, and generous caves. Inside it's fresh and bearable.

Outside, I curse the awful sun and the barren sky. Where are the clouds, damnit! We've got no real rains for two months. The last two days, I've seen smoke and flames from forest fires from my own home. Fortunately, they were both extinguished quickly by our firefighters. As I type this, I'm hearing the sound of another canadair flying by, high over my roof. Never before have we seen so much firemen activity in our vicinity.

The good thing, however, is that both our sources are steady and flowing. We, at least, will avoid draught -- for now.

I've heard in Italy, the river Po had totally dried up some days ago. I havn't heard, however, if it's flowing back or is still dried.

I was very surprised to learn grapes are now grown in Denmark. Or even corn, which is a warm weather crop.

Corn has been grown here as long as I can remember. Now wine is something very new, and actually it is very good wine that is made here now. Lat year a danish wine won first price (medal d'or) by the french wineboard for best debutant wine.

But history shows that it was been significantly warmer 1000 years ago.

Eric the Red named Greenland for its wide green pastures, and settled there. His son, Lief the Happy, when he discovered America in 942, called, what is now known as New Foundland, Vinland because of the fact that wild grapes were abundant there. (Vin equal both wine and grapes in danish).

I´m in Cádiz, Spain.

It´s hot here. 19 deaths from heatstroke, mostly in Andalusia, the southern part. (sp?)

I can call myself lucky, since here in the coast the heat is bearable, but in zones like Seville and Cordoba my relatives tell me that it´s almost impossible to sleep at night.

I am surprised to learn that people are now raising grapes in Denmark. Have any of our other posters in Europe noticed similar changes to crops and local fauna? (Serpenteye, are grapes being grown commercially in Sweden?)

Only for the last half-decade or so, in the southernmost parts. But they are pretty insignificant in comparison even to the Danish vineyards. The growing season is becoming longer in our part of Europe, though, and the Swedish farmers are profiting from global warming. Especially since the deserts are growing in the south. It's sad but true that one man's luck is someone elses misfortune.

Hehe this afternoon I found 3 dead sparrows who just fell of the roof, that were numbers 11, 12 and 13 this week. Those buggers are litterally droppnig dead from the heat.

Well, Aggemam, its recent, since it has only been grown for about 10-15 years. I remember corn from my early youth, but when I was a child (15-20 years ago) you didn't see many (if any) corn fields.
