(Way OT) How bad is the heat wave in Europe?

Well Edena you sound more than sufficiently educated on the current state of weather in Europe. What more are you looking for - I would guess enworld members in that part of the world would just say what you suspect, "Yea, it's hot." or "Yea, the water level is critically low in the lakes, etc."

But what is your take on the REASON for this weather "spike"? Could it be just a severe weather abberation like El Nino was several years ago? Or is it something else?

Things are alright in Southern Ontario as well. Usually we get a few days during the summer peaking around 36 - 39 degrees (C) but its been very comfortable this year.

I hope this wave ends in Europe pretty soon, I can only imagine the environmental catastrophe should it continue for a prolonged ammount of time.

Yea, but according to the Ice records form Greenland and other places the world is still 2 to 5 degrees cooler then it was during the time of the Rome Empire. I wouder if the ice records are as accurate as most say they are or what the climate was around that time.

Also one must remember that most of Europe lies north of the US. Copenhagen lies on the 45th parallel, and the Canadian/US border is on the 39th for the most part.

Btw, record low in Denmark in July was -1/30 C/F, in 1941 (IIRC).

It's freakin hot. Here in Manheim/Kaiserslautern GE area it's been right around 97 F. (Sorry I don't know the C conversion.)

The worst part though is the lack of air conditioning. It sucks. Why can't the germans build AC into thier houses? Of course this heat wave is unusual.

That's all from me. I'm going to go lie down on the bathroom tile. Heck, if it works for my cats then it should work for me.

I have no reply to that question, because any answer would involve politics, and politics are banned in ENWorld.

I am curious as to how bad it really is, and what effect it is having on the ecosystem. On the trees, on the rivers, and so on.
I am hearing of rivers drying up, roads melting, rails buckling, and even rockslides on the Matterhorn, but I'd prefer to hear more personal accounts from our European ENWorld Members.

I'll say this: if we had no air conditioning at our house, and it went to 100 for three days straight, we'd be in real trouble (as in, hospital type trouble.)

It´s friggin´ hot over here in Germany. My Grandma just passed out the other day; she´s in the hospital right now.

And no end in sight.

The worst thing is the air conditioning problem. Those of you in the US and other hot areas have air conditioning as standard. We don't have it here in the UK - why would we? It's never hot enough to warrant it. So there's nowhere to escape the heat - I'm in my living room, and I feel like I'm in a furnace. I've had 3 cold showers today.

Also, bear in mind that we're just not acclimatised to the heat. I imagine it's easier to bear when you're used to it. We're acclimatised to cool weather and rain.

Morrus, you could go check the Hivemind thread, where I adviced Tallarn to put wet towels in the window (remember to have the window open (as if you didn't)). Make sure to keep them wet.

With the low humidity you have in the UK, it should work out fine as A/C. I know it works for me here.

It's very hot in Tooting south London, around 97 degrees Fahrenheit, and of course we have no air conditioning... *gasp*

Edit: The London Underground is especially nasty in the heat - it gets over 100F down there on a normal summer, it's worse currently.
