(Way OT) How bad is the heat wave in Europe?

Zogg, Edena is a he.

I would hope that no one here would be so mean spirited as to deliberately try to close a thread with posts that violate the rules here at EN World. This would probably cause the moderators to be GREATLY annoyed.

You do make some good points in your last post, although I would not call any of the moderators lackeys. Of course, I doubt that Piratecat will keel haul you for your comments.;)

Here is what I wanted to contribute, a link to a story on the heat deaths. My condolences to the French people on the death of their citizens: France tackles heat emergency.

Double post!

Skill!

I really have nothing more to say, and hand this thread back over to Edena and her moderator lackeys.

Then get out of here and stop bothering us with those quite rude and annoying posts. That's like painting a great bullseye on your head for a mod to take a couple o'banno pot shots at.

We've still got one going on. 80s along the coast rising into the 90s inland, with 110s in the desert. Plus thunderstorms in the mountains with a good possibility of some reaching the coast. The storms courtesy of Arizona's summer monsoonal flow from the Gulf of California.

Fans are flying off store shelfs around here. My apartment has a built in fan, but that hasn't worked since I moved in. Other then the fact it's been real hot and humid around here lately, nothing to report on a rise in mortality or anything like that.

Oddly enough, I only just got back from Dubai, U.A.E. at the end of last week during the heatwave. The big difference is that the Middle East region is used to this heat so EVERYTHING is air conditioned.

It really depends on where/why you are over there. When I was there in '90-'91 we were in the field the entire time. While it never hit 150, the first months we were there it was regularly 120+. NBC training isn't exactly fun in those conditions. lol

The US, British & other troops over there now are in similar circumstances. AC is hard to come by in a combat zone.

Of course the Bedouins spend their entire lives in those conditions without AC which is pretty darn impressive.

The heat wave is over now around here, but I don't think the heat ever was the biggest problem in the Netherlands. As others have pointed out, there are hotter parts on this world and people still live there. In any event, as far as I know no real records have been broken in the Netherlands as far as temperatures are concerned.

What *is* a problem is the drought combined with the incredible low water levels in the rivers. Ships can still use the rivers around here, though the bigger ships cannot take a full load (which actually makes it a good year for trade ships since they still get paid the same amount and more ships are needed). The Rhine is not at an all time low record, though if things do not change in one week it will be. Worst are the problems around the cooling water of power plants (though that has been lowered as well with the reduction in temperature) and the fact that sea water now can get further inland. Cities around here are litteraly build on poles, mind you, there is no air between them, they are used for support on the soft clay. Elder building have used wooden poles and the lower water level makes these rot. This in turn forces the Water managing companies to pump silt water into the area whith all the problems for nature and farmers...

If you really want to bring it up, take it to Meta.

This thread never had to go political--all it really was meant for was to let people talk about the weather in their part of the world. There was never any need to talk about media bias in reporting the weather, nor root causes of the weather, nor anything else bordering on political subjects.

If you want to call questioning the EN World rules political, that's your prerogative. Several of the rules are absolute--the grandma rules, politics and religion rules. OT posts are not going to be banned any time soon. The standard rule of thumb that if you can only post to a thread with something snarky, then maybe you should just leave that thread alone is a good one.

Woof.

Fair point! Although I mainly meant to illustrate in general the city folk in that region are better prepared (or used to it) for the heat than the European cities since it is a constant factor of life rather than a non-normal heatwave :). When there I bought a dishdash (since I had one when I was a teenager which is a bit small) and those things are much cooler than normal "western" shorts and t-shirt. I wore it here in the office one day for a laugh, and preferred it to what I had been wearing in the heat. :D

will what is a dishdash?

A dishdash is the name in the UAE and some surrounding regions for the long white "frock" that they where in the region, including the headdress. "Thobe" is the name for the frock alone in saudi and UAE, and "gutra" is the headdress. :)
