D&D 5E We Don't Need Magic Shops!... or How My Players Continually Confound Me.

This is a hilarious post for me because the last campaign I ran (for adults mind you) just about everybody wanted some sort of pet. The guy playing a monk wanted a dire wolf (he'd seen a lot of Game of Thrones recently) and the woman playing the kender thief (yes, I allowed Kender in my game and yes, I'm an idiot) wanted some sort of magical pet (she wanted something like Ein from Cowboy Bebop). A few of the others just wanted big dogs. It was crazy.

I did get the monk a small dire wolf. I warned him that unless he took levels in Ranger the wolf wouldn't level up with him and while he could teach it a few "tricks" it would never fight very well. He said he didn't care and he managed to keep it alive throughout the campaign (we never got beyond 10th level).

For the kender thief I ended up giving her a chance to steal a Cooshee (a type of elven dog with green fur) from a rich elven noble. It was terrible in a fight (nearly died like a dozen times) but it could teleport and once a day could take someone with it (sort of like a ring of teleportation). It was OP for the kender's level but she ended up using it to save other people in the group more often than not so I considered it okay.

If I had it do over again I would use the Companion rules someone created for managing these sorts of things (check DMs Guild for a copy). It's full of great rules that make this a lot easier.
