I don't know that Bargle or anyone mostly known to fans in their 50s or older is a good centerpiece for a campaign necessarily. Using him in a cameo role, like the action figure characters were used in Witchlight, makes more sense to me.

That said, "court wizard turns on the local ruler and becomes a fugitive the players eventually have to hunt down" is a good framework. Dropping him into Heroes of the Borderlands in this role, turning on the (hopefully named this time) castellan would work well and be a reason for the newbie heroes to run all around the Borderlands, trying to hunt him down.

He can even have his infamous scene of killing off an adventurer by having a rival group of non-evil adventurers running around the Borderlands who make the mistake of catching up to Bargle before they're capable of handling him.

well that's the thing

Bargle is practically the personification of what the worst in gaming is and it would be cathartically satisfying to curb stomp him.

There was a filled-out version of that introductory adventure in the last (print) issue of Dungeon magazine that I once ran.

That said, I think a truly fleshed-out version would make a better starter set than a full-length AP. And I would buy it in a heartbeat to inflict on a new generation of gamers.

Love it.

I have to turn in my geek crew card though. I got into DnD with Moldvay Basic then moved into ADnD.

I had no idea who or what Bargle was until many years later.
Same.

HOPEFULLY the 2024 DMG uses the sample dungeons from older editions in some capacity. AD&D, and all three basic books.

I will say that the PHB could have used some charachter death in it's example of play. Pretty tame stuff.l compared to what we had in the 80s.

Given how much they've been visiting the nostalgia pool, I wouldn't be surprised! I wouldn't be opposed either- I'm sickeningly susceptible to the nostalgia crap. Then again I already used Bargle in my games last year, and my players hated him in a glorious way...

Anyway, good idea :)

There was?

Which issue of Dungeon is that. Digital or in print?
