Weapon and Armour profs in the Holmes basic.

Quick question:

Can anyone tell me what weapons and armour the classes in Basic D&D could use - or, to be more specific, typically used. This is regarding the Holmes set, so just Fighting Men, Clerics and Magic-Users? A friend wants to draw some iconic character pics for B1: In Search of the Unknown, and we don't have the box to hand...

Well, for fighting men, it says "can use any weapons and wear any kind of armor including magic weapons and armor"

for Magic Users, "magic-users must not wear armor and can carry only a dagger for protection"

for Clerics, "They may, however, wear armor, including magic armor, and carry non-edged weapons such as the mace or the quarter staff. No swords or bows and arrows, however can be employed. The cleric is forbidden by his religion from the drawing of blood."

The assumption was very medieval weapons.
trancejeremy has hit the nail on the head with some good quotes... saved me pulling out my Holmes book ;P

If your friend needs specifics for fighting men, think longsword, shields, axes, maybe hammers if they were dwarves (though I think axes were more common for dwarves.)

Thieves can wear nothing stronger than leather armor and can not carry shields. They can use all the weapons of a fighting man including magic swords and magic daggers.
It's interesting how magic weapons and armor are specifically mentioned as allowable in certain places but not mentioned in others.

For instance, can m-us carry, (note: doesn't say "use"), magic daggers? Can clerics carry/use a magic mace or quarterstaff? Can thieves wear magic leather armor?

I believe of course they can, but it is interesting how the writer/designer phrased the passages, as if being magical could/might somehow change the basic rule.
