For purposes of Weapon Proficiency and similar feats, a composite longbow is treated as if it were a longbow.

Indeed I did! On a completely unrelated note, I also just found out that you can add different abilities to a single item, like making a ring of protection +2 ALSO an invisibility ring. That's crazy - was it like this in 3.5?

Yes. Most serious item-crafting characters would do this sort of thing as a matter of course, at high enough levels.
