I don't get weapon size if a pistol does 1d8 small and 1d10 large does a small pistol do 1d8 damage or does apisstol do 1d8 damage to a small creature ie. a halfling?

It's the size of the weapon, not the target.

A pistol that does 1d10 when built for use by a human would do 1d8 when built smaller for use by a halfling.

That would be odd. 9mm with big ol' grips aren't, at D&D/d20's level of resolution, appreaciably more powerful than compact 9mm pistols that smaller hands can grip.

Let's not confuse the issue. ;)

The question he asked was about pistols, so I used pistols in my example. Logical or not, it follows the weapon size rules.

But, to use a more D&D-specific example, a regular (medium) longsword does 1d8. A small longsword (built for a gnome, say) does 1d6.
