Weather of the Destructive Kind

Given that there's a Tornado warning in effect right now a dozen or so miles from my house, I had an interesting thought here (as I should be seeking low ground probably).

I've -never- heard of Tornados anywhere outside of the continental US. I've seen a waterspout or two in a few asian nations, but never anything on land. Do Tornados as a weather phenomenon just not exist outside of the US? Are they a unique feature of the geography and weather conditions here in the US, or do other areas of the world see them as well.

Literally, outside of the USA, I've seen more news about tornados on Mars, than in any other country here on earth. Am I wrong here?

We had lots of them here too. Lots of rain to the northwest of my place. But I think all we got here was lots of rain. Fortunately no tornadoes. A friend of mine who lives just south of Charlotte didn't even notice the rain.... he was out of it due to his pain meds. But I hope the worst is over.
