Web Cams

Kazzy

First Post
Anyone ever played D&D over a web cam. One of our players can't attend our games every week since he's stationed 5 hours away from where we play. He came up with the idea of placing a web cam at the game and he would get one for his place so he could play. I'm good with computers so I'm sure I can figure out how to do all this but I need some help getting started. Has anyone ever done this before? If so what quality of webcams did you use? Did you pay for a server? Or how did it all work?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have never gamed with a webcam but its probably very easy to get it to work, on the technical side.

Regarding audio... I'd use a separate program for voice communcations, such as teamspeak or skype. They have great audio quality which is probably more important than video. You need a good microphone if all the players "on-site" have to share it.

Use your own computer as server. The specific "webcam hosts" all over the internet are for those who dont know what an IP or port is, or how you set up server-software, and I assume you do.

Regarding the image quality here's a sample from a mid-range camera in a dark environment:

Here's from a low end camera:

Good luck.

We had a player web cam into our games for a few sessions.

* He eventually lost interest because it wasn't the same as "being there in person." So, look for ways to keep the player involved and interested.

* Assign the web cam to a player to manage. I was GMing, and the first session I was responsible for dealing with the cam. It was huge time sink. Connections were lost, the player wanted things repeated, etc. Get a player to be the web cammer's helper.

* Make the cam mobile. This let's the helper player pick it up and point it around the GM, other players, the battlemap, etc. My player reported a static view got boring pretty quickly, especially if things happened outside of view.

* Use an online chat client. It drastically improved communication.

* We used a wireless keyboard and mouse. That made it really easy to chat with the web cam player as we could pass the keyboard around during play for one-on-one communications.

* Consider lighting and default cam placement carefully. It's boring if the player is just seeing the GM all the time. It makes them not feel like a member of the group. We tried a ceiling position, but the player reported that we appeared too distant. I think the ultimate would be a player remote-controlled cam, or having several cams for the player to choose from at any given time.

* Prepare more player handouts. This helped our player connect better with the game. Paper handouts can be flashed in front of the cam for the remote player to take a screenshot of. Digital handouts can be e-mailed or IM'd to the remote player.

* Mapping was brutal with figs and minis. We didn't have RPM, Fantasy Grounds, etc. at that time. I would recommend experimenting with this.

* Try to establish some kind of physical presence for the remote player. We set up an extra monitor on a chair and the player could be seen at all times and it felt just like he was sitting at the table. Otherwise, we found the remote player was forgotten or neglected.

* Consider sound carefully. Our remote player said he found it very difficult to hear when we were laughing or when players were talking at the same time. We had two mics: one beside me so the remote player could hear the GM at all times. The other was given to the players to pass around.

* Our remote player had a hard time getting our attention. Find some way for the player to get the group's attention, such as holding up a red paper in front of the cam.

After several sessions, the cam player dropped out. His complaints were that he felt like an outsider because of the restricted view, sound issues, and lack of personal presence at the game table. It was also more work for me as the GM, regardless of how we tried to streamline things, though I would have continued without complaint.

My 2 cents.

Wow lots of great advice, thanks. I'll let you guys know how it works out. I think having multiple cameras is probably a good idea and or a way for the Web Cammer to control things from his end. Or well if not I know I'm gonna get stuck with Camera duty hehe, I'm the only one thats computer savy enough.

We have access to Teamspeak and Ventrillo so we can use one of those for voice probably TS since we have more control over that one, but I could probably get admin privilages set up on the Vent server too. And I have 2 webcams although the picture quality is of the lower varitity. Maybe eventually if it works well and he wants to stick with it we can all pitch in for a better camera.

What kind of software did you use for the webcam Johnnforr? I know the camera's all come with some software but is one better then the other etc.

I've done a little work with servers, IPs etc before. Right now all our computers are hooked to a router on DSL. I'll have to brush up on it but its good to know that I can use my computer for the server.

One more question how good of a computer do I need to do this? I was thinking about setting it up on either the laptop which is kinda old. Only a pentium 600 and a 16MB video card. The Ram is 256MB. Or buying a cheap desktop for it. I could probably get a desktop for around $500 with a low end gaming Video card and more ram, higher processor speed etc then my current laptop. It would just be a pain since it wouldn't be a portable then again maybe the wireless mouse and keyboard are the way to go.

One of my players has to leave early on game day, so when she got home last sat, I set the laptop up with speaker a mic, and a webcam. I put the cam on the ceiling looking at the board. One mic easily picked upp all our conversation. And we all heard her fine. We just used msn messenger which has audio and video. It was a pretty good substitute.
