Web of insanity?

Howdyho, folks

Quick question: Have you found Web to be a little too strong against massed folks when playing low-levels?

i.e., a Scroll-fired Web, with a Reflex DC 13, will still cause those who make the save to move through it using DC 15+ Str or Escape Artist checks. At 5 feet for each 5 full points the check exceeds 10, they'll be lucky to move 5, nevermind 10 feet. Catch 'em near the middle and that's several rounds.

At low levels, it seems this is a bit powerful. What do you think?

Meh. It's all part of shaping the battlefield. Yes, it's powerful and nasty. It can also go both ways. Meaning that while PCs can use this to good effect at early levels, mooks can always use this against the PCs.

Web is a more concentrated version of the Entangle spell... so you have the same results: -2 to Attacks, -4 to Dex, and a 15+spell level concentration check to cast. That isn't going to kill you unless you need mobility. It's going to make you more vulnerable, but remember: the web is flammable. A torch will defeat it, even if you will take some damage while the web burns. A person wielding a flaming sword can move at normal movement through the web. I would rule that Alchemists fire will burn away 9 squares what with the splash damage. So with all of these options to get through the web, I'd say it's not overpowered.

I disagree. Web is one of the notoriously overpowered (for its level) spells in 3.5. Why they fixed Haste and Shield and not Web is beyond me.

Presumably because not everyone thinks it's overpowered? I find it one of the more powerful spells at the level, but not to a degree where it needs any change.

Personally, I don't see why they "fixed" spells like Spider Climb. 2nd level? Wtf? In 3e (specifically, in Tome & Blood) Spider Climb was used as the example of how 1st-level spells should be in regards to power. Somewhere in the upgrade, however, one of the game developers decided that this "perfect example of a 1st-level spell" was suddenly "too powerful to be a 1st-level spell".

I got to agree with Felix. It is powerful but not overly so. I think the thing that makes it not quite as powerful is the cover. You can catch an opponent in the web but then you can't do much against him until it wears off.

Just to add my two cents worth, I believe that the Web spell requires anchor points to hold the web, so you can't just cast it anywhere and expect it to work.

Right. And the anchor points have to be "diametrically opposed points" like a floor and ceiling or two walls, so it cuts down on the list of situations where it can be used.
