Website (Domain Hosting)

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but seeing as this is my first post here, it may well be. . .

Anyways, I am strongly considering purchasing a reseller hosting account in order to host Role Playing Websites, and I wanted to gauge intrest - could I expect to fill up the account, or have trouble getting 1-2 people to take it up.

What this would be is that you (ie the person I would be hosting) would purchase a domain name (could be as low as 8.88/year, i think) and I would host them, probably giving between 50-200mbs, mysql etc. depending on the person's needs, and the number of people who would take this up.

I would do this for free, other then the fact that you would have to buy the domain on your own.

The only real limitation, set in stone, would be that the sites had to be RPG related - either a campaign setting, rule system, or what not.

So, would anyone be interested?
If I get a reasonable response, I'll try to get the account ASAP.

I think there are always people interested in something like this, but in my experience, these sites rarely last very long, or are plagued with a host of problems. That's not to say that your's won't be different, but personally, I've been burned too many times.

The current host for my Web site (which is definitely RPG-related) is the fifth in as many years. Fortunately, this one is stable and accessible - but it is neither RPG-specific nor completely free (well, it could be free but with the space I need and the bandwidth people use, I have to pony up a few bucks each month; but the cost is minor, and worth it to avoid the frustration of the host being down, or FTP being unavailable, or the host adding pop-up ads, or the process that adds the Javascript for those ads cutting off parts of my pages, or the host redirecting visitors to my URL to an Audi dealership, or...you get the idea).

I'd also wonder how long you'd be able to offer that much for free, even if you have pop-up ads or banner ads. But if you can do it, more power to you.

Anyway, I figured I'd offer my opinion on the subject. I can't speak for anyone else, but I know the frustration of dealing with other hosts like this, and the lack thereof with my current host will keep me where I'm at for the time being.

If I did purchase a reseller account, it would probably be from a reliable host (maybe DixieSys, but I'm still looking). . .and would be up for at least one year, as I would pay that far in advance. At that point, even if I did take it down - which I doubt - the sites would have had one year of life - if they became popular, they could maybe move on to other hosts, if not, their owners havn't really lost anything, except their time.

But seeing as there has been no response here, It doesn't look like Ill even try to do this anyways.

Folks not responding here doesn't actually indicate a lack of interest, for a couple of reasons.

First, this whole forum is only read by a quite limited subset of the ENWorld board; I suspect there are a lot of folks in other forums who would be interested, including the Art Gallery forum.

In addition I suspect the title of the thread has turned away some who might be interested. I know I thought you would be asking for advice on a good host, and when I came back to read it again a couple of days later I thought the same thing. Perhaps if you titled it "Possible Free Web Hosting for RPG Sites," you'd get much more response, or at least would know for certain that there was a lack of interest.

Just some thoughts. I applaud your generous nature, and if I hadn't picked up my own domain and web host a few weeks ago, I'd be expressing interest now.

You may want to check into Prohosting . They are a very reliable host. I have had my sites hosted by them for the past year and a half and have yet to experience any downtime or problems. I have my personal site, my rpg site, and my band's site all hosted by them.
