D&D 3E/3.5 Weightless Foot [3.5]

Mistah J

First Post
Hey everyone!

So, I was looking at the Ghost-faced Killer PrC in the Complete Adventurer the other day when it struck me that it had appeared before in Dragon #289. It was in an article that featured two other PrC's as well.

So I figured, "what the heck.. maybe they could be updated too.." and here I am!

I started with the Weightless foot and though the mechanics are quite different in some places - I think the flavour is the same. I hope you agree

Things I am considering are to put the Move Silently bonuses back in somehow (maybe just include them in the skill mastery and such) and also - better jumping; possibly removing the "Double DC" system from high jumps and standing jumps all together.

I'd love to hear any suggestions, please lay 'em on me (especially on the weightlessness ability - what kind of things can you think of that would fit here).

Class Features
All the following are class features of the weightless foot prestige class.

Weapon and Armour Proficiency: A weightless foot gains no weapon or armour proficiencies.

Slow fall (Ex): As a character gains levels in the weightless foot class, her slow fall ability improves. Her class levels stack with any monk levels for the purpose of determining her total slow fall distance. Should the character have the slow fall ability from a class other than monk, she gains the slow fall distance of a monk whose level is equal to her weightless foot class levels, which then stack with the slow fall of the other class. If the total slow fall distance equals 100ft or more, the character can simply slow fall any distance as a 20th lvl monk.

Free Movement (Ex): Dedication to the path of the weightless foot requires an unencumbered body as well as an unencumbered mind. A weightless foot loses access to all special class features if she wears any form of armour or shield or carries a medium or heavy load.

Perfect Acrobat (Ex): A weightless foot gains a competence bonus equal to her class level to all Balance, Climb, Jump, and Tumble checks.

Evasion (Ex): A Weightless foot gains the evasion ability at 2nd level. If thecharacter already has the evasion ability, they gain improved evasion instead. If they already have improved evasion they get no other ability.

Uncanny Step (Ex): As a weightless foot advances, she learns to use her slow fall ability in a variety ways. At 3rd level, a weightless foot can include vertical surfaces in her movement. She can travel a number of feet on a vertical surface equal to her maximum slow fall distance provided that she start and end her movement on a horizontal surface. If she does not end her movement on the horizontal plane she immediately falls (though her slow fall ability applies). Passing the boundary between horizontal and vertical is equivalent to 5ft of movement on a normal floor. While on the vertical plane the weightless foot has full range of her movement based skills and abilities such as Tumble or Step without thought [see below]. Likewise, while on a vertical surface the weightless foot can still provoke attacks of opportunity if her movement would normally do so.

Fast Acrobatics (Ex): A weightless foot no longer suffers the penalties associated with accelerated movements. She ignores the -5 penalty to Balance checks while moving at her full speed. She can climb at half her speed as a move action without taking the -5 penalty on her Climb check. Finally, she can tumble at her full speed without taking the -10 penalty to her Tumble check.

Trackless Step (Ex): Due to her mastery of light, fleeting movement, a weightless foot can choose to no longer leave a trail and thus cannot be tracked by conventional means (the scent ability and other methods that do not rely on physical evidence may be able to track the character at the DM’s discretion).

Step of the Lily (Su): Beginning at 5th level, the weightless foot can now use her slow fall ability to travers across liquids and other unsolid substances. When moving, she can treat such surfaces as if they were solid ground for a number of feet equal to her maximum slow fall distance. She must start and end this movement on a normal solid surface, failure means that at the end of her movement she immediately suffers the normal effect of standing on an unstable or non-solid surface. This ability does not grant the weightless foot any sort of protection against dangerous or harmful substances, such as a pool of acid or lava, and so damage from contact still applies.

Skill Mastery (Ex): At this level, a weightless foot has become a master of athleticism. She can now take 10 on Balance, Climb, Jump, and Tumble checks even when under stress or threat of danger.

Step without Thought (Ex): Motion becomes second nature to the weightless foot. So much so, that she can combine her movement with other actions. Starting at 7rd level, the weightless foot can move both before and after she takes a standard action, provided the total distance moved does not greater than her speed. The weightless foot must move at least 5 feet before and after her standard action in order to use this ability.

Step of the Cloud (Su): The weightless foot can now use her slow fall ability to move across the very air. While moving, she can treat empty space as if it were solid ground for a number of feet equal to her maximum slow fall distance. She must start and end this movement on a normal solid surface, failure means that at the end of her movement she immediately suffers the normal effect of standing in mid-air. This movement through air must be primarily horizontal in nature, the weightless foot can only ascend or descend 5ft for every 20ft travelled.

Improved Leap of the Heavens (Ex): At 9th level, the weightless foot expands her ability to jump great distances. From this point, the benefit of her Leap of the Heavens feat improves so that the DC for standing jumps are no longer quadrupled.

Weightlessness (Su): Upon reaching 10th level, the weightless foot has achieved the pinnacle of her training and become a master of her chosen path. From this point on, the character has an effective weight of zero. In this state, the character’s weight is negligible when being lifted or carried by others. She does not exert any pressure when moving along the ground and therefore does not spring traps with such triggers, nor can she be detected with the tremorsense ability. While weightless, the character is considered to be under a continual feather fall effect. The weightless foot does not suffer any hindrance or drawbacks that would come from having no weight (such as being blown about by wind gusts or penalties to bullrush or overrun attempts). Furthermore, the weightless foot may suppress this ability as a free action if desired.

How does this balance out against a similar leveled character? It seems that at the 10th level other classes might outshine this PrC at it's niche "shtick", being highly mobile. Heck, a similarly leveled Warlock could be flying 24/7 at this point... I like the PrC idea mind you. It would fit a low magic campaign really well... But how does it balance out against other classes?

As for having bad timing, those of us that will be skipping 4E still appreciate the effort...
