Weird group makeup. Advice sought!

I don't know about an adventure, but a premise for them to be together:

A dwarven and a gnomish underground settlement, connected by an underground lake, have had their underground trading boats connection disrupted by some *very* strange creatures emerging from the depths. The dwarf could be some kind of champion for hsi settlement, and together with the gnome effigy master they go look for a strange reclusive gnome (the alienist) who might know something about such creatures.

Now you want to make a suitably weird quest. The Laughing Rogue hung over after a long night promises the party a ring of three wishes for each of you if they bring him the ultimate bottle of wine or else you will have the worst luck you have ever had. *Hick*

Depending on the God/dess that the Dwarf worships, it looks to me like this party is well-equipped to be a research team (ESPECIALLY if the Dwarf uses the Cloistered Cleric variant from Unearthed Arcana).

Personally, I enjoy sci-fi and fantasy together like PB&J, and I think you got a good shot of having the same thing here. With automata and alienist powers, it's evident that these people are interested in knowing What's "Out There". Being dwarves and gnomes, they'll have all sorts of interesting opportunities to scour the underworld for ruins, lost civilizations and so forth. I'd run a Fantasy X-Files/Investigative type-game with a touch of Call of Cthulu for weirdness -- use lots of abominations, demons/devils, and random non-standard humanoid races. Psionics would be an excellent force to study/use against the heroes as well.

For a spellcasters only bunch, take a page out of Ars Magica.

The group of forming a wizard's coven out in X. They are building a wizard's tower, magical library, the works. They've heard about an item of power near the city of Y guarded by fierce monsters. The item is perfect for their tower, so the party heads off into the fray.
