Werewolf and regenerating severed limbs

I do not know much about werewolves, so I am very unsure of this. I understand that a werewolf can only be harmed by silver weapons by the original myth; however, if a werewolf is damaged by another creature or somehow (maybe by another werewolf) is able to sever a limb due to melee hand-to-hand combat – does the severed limb regenerate?

While that is game and DM dependent, there is mythic basis for werecreatures not regenerating lost limbs.

I know of a oriental tale about a hunter who went into the woods to slay a rogue tiger that had been hunting and killing local townsfolk. His wife protested that it was too dangerous, but he would not be swayed. Once deep in the woods, he was ambushed by the tiger, who had laid a clever trap for him. He managed to fend the tiger off, lopping off one of its paws in the process. He wrapped the bloody paw in a placed it in his hunting satchel and returned home.

Once home, he was excited to relate the tale to his wife. At its end, he produced the bloody bundle from his satchel and unwrapped it. To his horror, instead of a tiger paw was the delicate hand of a woman. Worse still, on it's ring finger it bore the jade ring the hunter had given his wife. Needless to say, the hunter found that his wife had attempted to hide the mangled stump of her wrist with a badly bleeding bandage. It was she who was the weretiger and had been preying upon the townsfolk!

Thanks folks....and thanks for the story....guess i have to read up on my werewolf novels. Can anyone recommend any stories....(not that kiddie stuff like Twilight....something dark, along the lines of A.Rice and S.King) I know S.King did have a werewolf novel...just never read it.

Yeah, I think I've heard of several tales similar, where the lycanthrope was found out due to a damaged limb or a scar that matched in both forms.

Fun fact: Eastern European (I think Slavic) folklore has werewolves that come back as vampires when they die. Dunno if this has ever been used in a campaign setting.

Sadly, I haven't read any decent books devoted to Werewolves and their kin (I've read a few werewolf-based novels, but none I'd recommend).

However, I will suggest these sources:

The Wolfman (movie, 2010) - A decent movie that covers the basics of werewolf lore

The Howling (movie, 1981) - I have not personally seen this, but I've heard it's one of the better werewolf movies

Wolfen (movie, 1981) - A movie about werewolves who hunt the city streets

Silver Bullet (book by S. King, movie 1985) - I've only seen the movie, and have heard the book is far superior (one would hope so...)

An American Werewolf in London (movie, 1981) - A psychological thriller with dark humor about an unfortunate individual who is infected with lycanthropy.

oWod Werewolf: the Apocalypse (RPG, White Wolf Studios) - A game of modern werewolves who fight against the corruption of "the Wyrm". There is also a card game (Rage) and I believe several novels related to the line.

nWod Werewolf: the Forsaken (RPG, White Wolf Studios) - A modern werewolf game with strong Native American overtones

One of my favorite werewolf movies of the past decade or so is Dog Soldiers.

I also liked the original Howling movie, as well as An American Werewolf in London.
