Mods: I don't know what discussion was edited out of the previous posts. I'm trying to avoid talking politics here, but I'm slightly worried that any argument about the law might nevertheless touch on the subject.

Anyway, back on earth, it's pretty scary to see the federal government putting anyone other than a mobster in jail for tax evasion when they could simply charge them a fine.
Why? A crime is a crime, regardless of who commits it. Fining an actor for a crime that would send a mobster to jail smacks of preferential treatment. Not only that, what's the use of fining someone who has so much money that having a bit less would not affect them greatly? According to IMDB, Washington earned $20 million for each of his last three movies. I doubt he'd lose much sleep over paying the $5 million he offered.
His defence was apparently that he's idealistic and naive, and doesn't understand finance. That's sounds a bit feeble to me. For a start, he isn't so naive that he's not getting piles of money for his work. Also, I'm pretty sure that if you're earning that kind of money you have some experts advising you what to do with it. And no matter how naive you are, you'd have to be completely out of touch with reality to think that you could earn a more than decent living and not have to pay tax on it.
Also, you could argue that a huge Hollywood star is a rolemodel for people, and along with the privileges of being so rich and famous comes the responsibility to do the right thing. If the court had ordered him to do some high-profile community service, that might also have served a purpose, but I don't think a fine would be any kind of deterrant to repeating the crime, and it would have sent out a signal that it's OK for famous people to evade tax.
On a personal note, although I don't agree with a lot of the taxes I have to pay here in the Netherlands, I
do pay them, and if people can get away with tax evasion, it means I (and millions of other people) just have to pay more to make up the difference. So I say, hit them hard!
