West End Games for Sale

I have pretty much the entire WEG product line, with TORG being my favorite by far. I always loved the "Master" system and was never really crazy about the D6 rules (I converted WEG Star Wars to Master last time I ran it). The range that was published was awesome and the closure is causing the same kind of remorse I felt when GDW or FASA shut down. I hope that the IP gets some good homes and will return.

Pretty much the same for me but I was a bigger Bloodshadows fan. It with like earthdawn mixed with pulp detective stories, or a Garret PI Glen cook novel with Tommy guns. I loved the setting and loved the mechanics.

They were the former producers of the best selling Star Wars RPG, and had produced such award-winning games as Ghostbusters and Paranoia in the past. That they are up for sale is pretty big news.

In my mind, this is not very big news, since the WEG that's on the block now is not really the same WEG that I think of when looking at all the Star Wars d6 and Paranoia books.

WEG was sold to mr. Gibson several years ago, and not much of the former company remains. That which is now is a shadow of a shadow of the former WEG.

IMO of course.

I wouldn't expect much out of fan efforts to acquire the d6 rights right now. There are still licencees out there and any such arrangement would have to take their financial arrangements into account as well. Also note that there are standing offers for d6, as well as other properties, and have been for some time; I can't think of anyone that has spoken up about their offer that hasn't mentioned the near-utter lack of interest or communication on Gibson's part.

The big plum in the current iteration of WEG's pie is Junta, and that's going to be where the sizable offers are made. I suspect that all of WEG's holdings are going to wind up going to the company that gets Junta, and the rest may or may not be sold off from there. If there's a serious fan effort, it's probably going to have to wait til that happens.

Obviously based upon the current state of the company, and some of the resulting moves/decisions that were made, I would think long and hard about a business transaction with the current WEG, even one that simply purchases the rights to a property. It might seem cool to own and preserve a system/IP that you loved, but I would hate for someone (or a group) to end up paying the owner's bills for another month and getting nothing in return.

This is one reason people are discussing buying the property, not the company. If you buy the company's property (which can include trademarks), you don't have to worry about paying existing bills. They stay with the company, which would still be owned by Eric.

I hope however gets the d6 system releases it either OGL or under a low cost license (like True20 before GR released it as a free license).
