D&D 5E We've had dragons, elementals, and demons - so what iconic evil is next?

It seems WotC is going for an "iconic evil" or iconic theme approach. Given what we have seen, or will see shortly, what would be next on the iconic checklist? In order of likelihood, I think:

Undead/Ravenloft
Underdark/Drow
Planes

What else might be on the list?

Creatures of The Far Realm would be a fun thing to base a story around. If we assume most aberrations are from the Far Realm initially, it raises a lot of interesting questions. Namely, for beings that came from a place of incomprehensible madness, they're remarkably well-adapted to our universe. Mind flayers must prey on creatures with a very human or at least terrestrial biology, so they must have come into being in response to the discovery of creatures with brains. Why is the Far Realm so much better at adapting to our world, when the merest glimpse of theirs drives us insane? It's really concerning. Is the Far Realm actively trying to "infect" our own realm?

...actually, didn't 4th edition bring up the concept that the Far Realm is a disease, and psionics is our realm's cure? That was a cool idea.

Strahd seems a very likely candidate, as does a Planar Incursion by the Githyanki, or something involving the Far Realm. Drow seems less likely, given the prominent role of the Underdark (and Drizzt) in the Rage of Demons storyline.

There's quite a lot of aquatic stuff in the MM, so perhaps they might go with sahaugin, building up to an endgame where they Release The Kraken?

Or they could revisit the Barrier Peaks. Or do a new Slavers story.

Personally, though, what I'd most like to see next is something new.

The next adventure will be an epic campaign about to find the bastard who killed the hookers that the players used to snort blow from. the shenanigans include, but are not limited to:

  • Vampires trying to find a solution to their sunlight problem. They find it, but as a side effect they sparkle.
  • Treant is sad because evil werehoneybadgers stole stuff from his weed farm. The werehoneybadgers don't give a crap.
  • Goblins gotten sick of being pushed around by their bigger hobgoblin and bugbear cousins. They have stolen some magical steroids and are in their ultimate muscle mode.
  • In the end they will find a beholder addicted on eyedrops. This gives the beholder the ability to fire twice the beams, but three times the moisture!

They could always re-re-re-do the whole Against the Giants series...

It's late/early, but didn't the 'full-meal deal' include the Keep on the Borderlands and end up in the Vault of the Drow?
