What about Lensers from Chronicles of Riddick

One of the scarriest part of Riddick for me were the humanoids debased into bloodhounds. I think they were called lensers.

I can see this for an orc breed (they'd have to really hate their own kind to do it). I can't see gnolls do this - too proud.

What would people think of a specialized tracker subspecies. Something that has its relatively large intellect fiercly directed too the hunt?

To me, its a very HUMAN thing to do.

Reminds me of the junkies in William S Burroughs works. The cops kept a few old junkies around to hunt down other junkies. Once on the trail of an old user, they would bring these old, used up junkies to the target's room, have them sniff, paw at and do unmentionable things with the junky's works (wow... had to edit this part, as soon as I start talking Burroughs, I start writing Burroughs, and it gets pretty graphic).

Then they send them out on the street, chasing down the junky by smell, horribly junk-sick, wanting the heroin in the junky's blood. They would eat right through a door to get to their target, their mouths no longer jawed and tooty, but circular like a lamprey, with hundreds of little rasping teeth, trying desperately, achingly, to get the junky, to drain him of the precious dope held within.

There're orcs like that in LotR. One makes an appearence in RotK (book). Nowhere near as debased as the lense-guys, though.

It does, indeed, strike me as a human sort of thing. Not that fantasy races wouldn't be capable of all the unpleasant little human atrocities.
