on the flip side ... why not use the small dog + dire template from Creature Catalog ... and now that I think about what you asked, I like the idea of just using a wolf with different fluff!

Should a dire fox be able to trip?

I'd say use the normal wolf stats. Remove the trip ability, and increase the will save to +4. (Dire animals have a good base will save.)
