What are D&D's Iconic Locales?

Off the top of me head:

Sigil
Glantri
City of Greyhawk
City of Brass
Blackmoor
Hommlet
Sea of Dust
Neverwinter
Tomb of Horrors
The Phlogiston
The Demiplane of Dread
Desert of Desolation

First of all, look right in your .sig. Lankhmar is the quintessential D&D city.

Well, yes and no ... Lankhmar predates D&D by about 50 years. ;)

I'll toss in my own votes for both Hommlet and the ToEE ... that's quintessential D&D for me. I would also add the Tomb of Horrors.

Honorable mention goes to that unnamed temple that the adventurers were plundering on the cover of the First Edition Player's Handbook.

(and perhaps revealingly, I note not a single sign of the Adventure Path in this thread)

None of them had locations that really sparked anything in my imagination, or that really tied them into Greyhawk for me. Admittedly I did find the inclusion of Acheron's gatetown of Rigus to be amusing. (Just proving that I will give Andy Collins credit when credit is due. I'm not all negatives here).

I never went back to look at any of the 2e or 1e Greyhawk material till I looked over Monte's stuff in 'RttToEE'.

my list

Hi,

I would go with:

The Vault of the Drow
The Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl
Xak Tsaroth
Undermountain & Waterdeep
Sigil
City of Brass

Cheers

Richard

Specific for dragonlance

And just to see how much I really do recall in terms of Dragonlance geography...

For Dragonlance:
Palanthas
Solace
Xak Tosrath <spelling?>
Thorbardin
The Tower of High Sorcery at Wayreth
Qualinesti
Silvanesti
Sanction
The High Clerists Tower
Kendermore
Mount Nevermind
Ergoth
Haven
Tarsis
The plains of Dust
Neraka

And to get really obscure....
Nordmaar
Mithas and Kothas
The Tower of High Sorcery at Daltigoth
Entwistle
The Lost Citidal
Sancrist
Taladas

I also recall that Icewall glacier region, but since I am not certain of the name, I am hesitant to count it.

END COMMUNICATION

In order (most Iconic down):

Blackmoor
City State of the Invincible Overlord
Free City of Greyhawk
Waterdeep

If you want to go with adventure locals,

Homlet
Temple of Elemental Evil
Castle Greyhawk
Vault of the Drow
Ravenloft

Iconic locations should be adventures unto themselves.

My picks:

Greyhawk:
The City of Greyhawk
Castle Creyhawk
The Tomb of Horrors
Hommlet and the Temple of Elemental Evil

Realms:
Waterdeep and Undermountain
Menzoberranzen
Shadowdale
Myth Drannor
Cormyr

Dragonlance:
Solace
Palanthas
Xak Tsaroth
The Towers of High Sorcery
Pax Tharkas

Eberron:
None yet; it's too young a campaign setting to have any truly classic elements. Sharn probably should make the cut in a few years, as it seems as it's being set up as a major city in the world.
