What are some of your favorite Magic Items from previous editions?

I'll stick in another vote for each of:

- Wand (or anything else) of Wonder
- Deck of Many Things (or any equally whacked-out variant)

And a few I haven't seen mentioned:

- Girdle of (any) Giant Strength - not the measly 3e version, but the 1e version that made you as strong as a frickin' Giant!
- Ring of Telekinesis
- Luck Blade, or any other item that had a hidden Wish in it that took effect the next time its owner said "I wish..."
- +x (usually +2) Giantslayer Longsword
- Ring of Invisibility

The new version of the Quiver of Elhonna is Endless Quiver in Adventurer's Vault. Not QUITE the same, but you get unlimited arrows or bolts.

I see that the Staff of the Magi is a favorite of a lot of people. Why is that? Is it because it was different in earlier editions, or simply because no one actually gets a Staff of the Magi in 3rd/4th edition?

3E/4E doesn't have a staff of the magi and if it did, it would be an exorbitant cost...Staves in 3e simply cost too much money compared to other items unfortunately...A staff of power is 200k gp and in 3E, you can get more bang for your buck buying other items.

As well, part of the appeal of the Staves was that they increased both your spell slots and spell knowledge. Two aspects that weren't easily circumvented in pre 3E whereas scroll creation and acquistion of spells in 3E are much easier than before thus the appeal of the staff of the magi goes down...

I had a half sea-elf ranger that loved the anchor feather Token. Used it on enemy ships at the begining of combat. (Swim up underneathe and hit the brakes!)

My faves: vorpal sword (duh!), cloak of elvenkind and the sphere of annihilation. And, let's not forget the most coveted items: Graz'zt's wavy-bladed acid-dripping sword, the manuals (like the manual of gainful exercise) and ioun stones.

Now, that is what D&D is all about!

BTW, I love the illustrations. I still have that book (Wizards & Witches), even though it's falling apart.
