Setting discussions always do. Every single time. There's always one who cannot respect another's setting and does not have the maturity to refrain from using words like "your setting sucks". Don't know why but it always happens.

Setting threads should just never be started.
Since saying that the FR (to use an example) sucks is not a personal attack on anyone that plays in the Realms, there's no call to go labeling such people immature or disrespectful. Rather, it's the folks that can't, for some reason, accept criticism of something that they like.

Oh, and glaciers next to deserts are not realistic in the real world? Isn't that exactly what Antartica is right now in the real world?

Wrong. And I'm rather disappointed that you would think so. You can discuss what issues you don't like about a particular setting without using disrespectful words like "sucks". It's childish. And it's not just the Realms. Something was said about Kalamar and a mouthful of sawdust. If I was a Kalamar fan I'd be pissed.

You want to talk about why you don't like why a particular land mass isn't where you like it? Or why NPC's should or shouldn't be powerful? Fine. Just do it in a manner that is repectful and not snide or derogatory.

I am the one who said that, so if you're going to pick fights, pick them with the right person. When I said it, I clearly labelled it not only as my opinion, but as possible evidence of my own blindness with respect to the setting. I made it very clear that I didn't say the setting "sucked", but that I personally missed out on any flavour that was present.

Why? Specifically to avoid hurting anyone's feelings. Why should you be personally affected by my opinion of a product you happen to own and like, anyways? If I don't like minivans (I don't) and you happen to drive one (hypothetically), does the voicing of my opinion constitute an attack on you and others who think differently? Of course not.

The day I mingle declarations of opinion with declarations of fact (i.e. "Nobody could ever enjoy Kalamar") you'll have something to complain about. In the meantime, I'm as willing to reconsider as anyone - in fact I've begun re-reading my Kalamar sourcebooks since my initial post anyways in the hope that this time something magical would jump out at me.

At any rate, enjoy whatever you enjoy - and please share with me the "why" of your opinions rather than attacking me for mine.

Edit: And by the way, yes I do own the core three Kalamar books (KoKCS, KoKPG and KoK:Atlas), as well as the vast majority of the Forgotten Realms books, so I've paid good coin and invested good amounts of time in forming my opinions. I do not share them around lightly.

True, there's no call to be snide or derogatory, but that doesn't mean that in summary, someone couldn't think that FR (again, for example) sucks. Although it's not a very useful opinion to express without more detail than that, it isn't an attack on anyone. Nobody's saying you suck, for instance. So there's no reason to get upset about it.

I'm not upset, annoyed, not upset. :) I guess from a personal standpoint I would rather discuss the more useful opinions without the clutter of, what I percieve as a complete waste of everyone's time and avoid the flame wars that invariably begin.

But I stand by my original statement that the "sucks" comment was useless and immature. And that these types of threads always go bad because of them.

Which is really what I was trying to say in the first place. etc..

I'll agree with you that "x Sucks" comments do nothing to advance the conversation and almost invariably lead to trouble, but... people have their opinions and some are less tactful than others in expresing them. Getting offended by them and drawing undue attention to them hurts more than it helps, unfortunately.

Cheers!

Hmmmm...

Not that anybody'd do it, but I could request that nobody post a Pro without a Con, and vice-versa. That way, if you want to say something nasty, you have to say something good, too.

That's all well and good until somebody asks you to list some "Pros" about something like F.A.T.A.L. though. :) Until that inevitable thread apocalypse you'll still have some lame pseudo-pros like "ummm, the pages didn't give me a papercut" thrown in to fulfill the obligation.

Not that I've been guilty of that in the past or anything.... ::guilty::

Don't think I was singling you out, I was really just looking for an example without searching far and wide. But dammit I don't care who has to die so I can prove a point! :) j/k
