What are you leaving out?

Well, for the setting I'm developing as a D&D setting, Wandering Stars, I'm leaving out halflings for the same reason others are leaving out gnomes-- the two are too similar, and I simply have much better uses for Gnomes. The main races in Wandering Stars are human, elf, dwarf, gnome, (hob)goblin, orc and a scaly race that's about half lizardfolk and half dragonborn. There's no Sorcerer class because draconic bloodlines simply aren't a thing outside of the Sauren, who have them as optional racial features.

Regarding orcs, in Tolkien "goblin" was really just a colloquial term for Orc. They are not even neatly divided into sub-races, it just a matter of terminology...

This isn't really "taking anything away", but I'm gonna make Dragonborn a mainly evil race in my game. Make them more related to dinosaurs, make them really aggressive and 'cold blooded', ha ha ha.

Kinda like Trandoshans, actually.

Left Out: Ranger, Paladin*, Barbarian, Monk, Druid, Favored Soul, Witch, Ninja, Binder, Beguiler, Archivist, Crusaders, Factotums, Hexblades, Scouts, Swordsage, Warblade, Warlock, Wu Jen, Warmage, Truenamer, Totemist, Swashbuckler, Spell Thief, Spirit Shaman, Soulborn, Sohei, Samurii, Marshall, Knight, Incarnate, Healer, All Prestige Classes, Studded Leather, Chain Shirt, Breast Plate, Two-Bladed Sword, Dire Flail, Gnome Hook Hammer, Orc Double Axe, Dwarven Urgosh, all Psionics, Dragonborn, Saurials, Half-Orc, 'Arctic' variant races, 'Desert' variant races, 'Jungle' variant races, most 'Aquatic' variant races except Sea Elves, Wood Elves, Grey Elves, Snow Elves, Dracotaurs, Goliaths, Darfellan, Warforged, Eladrin, Metallic Dragons, Oriental Dragons, Gem Dragons, pretty much everything 'Epic'

You say "Paladin*"- what was the asterisk for?

Ahh... left that in accidently.

I thought about having an asterisk explain that though I have in fact left out the classes Ranger, Paladin, Barbarian, and Druid, I've replaced them with homebrew classes. Then I thought it was distracting from my main point to qualify the statement.

All gnomes begin my game crucified. If any of the players have made Gnome characters, they roll two D6 and that's how many hours it takes for them to die forever.

Yeah... I'd say it's better to just not allow gnomes in the first place. Otherwise, if I was that player, I'd be out of your game.

So what is the distinction in your game between goblins, hobgoblins, and orcs?

So what is the distinction in your game between goblins, hobgoblins, and orcs?

The parentheses were to indicate that there's only one type of goblin, based on hobgoblins, but called "goblin" in-game. Goblins are rainbow-colored and horned, like miniature ogre mages, and have a disciplined hyper-militaristic society; they're telepathic and have innate shadow magic. Orcs are savage, bestial ape-men who maraud across the galaxy for the sheer love of battle, swarming over unprepared settlements with their sawed-off shotguns and their double-bitted axes.

Kinda want to do some kind of "troll" race, but I'm lacking for ideas. I don't want to use ogres for the same reason I don't use halflings; there's not enough to distinguish them from large (or small) humans and there are more interesting options for "big race" (or "small race").

Just as an idea...

Race: Halfling
Subrace: Gnome
Subrace: Hobbit (or some other name - tallfellow)
Subrace: Kender

In this way you do not disenfranchise a player, meanwhile it consolidates and makes them all fit into the same niche.

I personally really like this idea and will be utilizing this in my games.
