What are you thoughts on TTRPGs with non-standard dice?

I don't have an issue with Fudge dice.

But I otherwise don't own any RPGs that require custom dice to play. Which means I am probably mildly turned off by them.

I tend to think a game that pretty much demands them is offloading a little too much mechanical weight on the dice (I make that distinction to contrast with games where one particular space is a special character where its only a matter of convenience)

It discourages me from taking a closer look at the game and generally feels gimmicky more than like a genuine design need (funky dice).

Regular dice with special icons on them I can take or leave, they are mapped to ordinary dice easily enough

Fate dice are simple and so aren't a problem, but yeah other funky dice are just annoying. Hell I find d12s and even d8s to be annoying and yet they're considered 'standard'.

and as an addition - what do you think of systems that use Playing Cards instead of dice?

Regular cards or custom decks? 🙂

Regular perfectly fine with me. Custom decks are interesting as they also are basically a randomiser with a built in look up table. They are more tricky than custom dice in my opinion, as it’s easier to get a dice printed than a deck of cards (in the UK) so potentially harder to replace down the road.
