What books/supplys should I ask for the holidays?

Wow. Can I have your parents when you've finished with them? Thanks.

I think it's obvious that he's reached 8th level and Ms. Frost taught him to use the Mind Bondage spell on his parents to get them to buy him $200 worth of D&D manuals and miniatures. :-D

You could go to Amazon.com and create a wishlist of books. You can then send this wishlist to whomever you like so that they can buy the books there for you. Another decent way is for your mother to get you a gift card to Amazon.com or Barnes&Nobles or whatever outlet (probably even Drivethru, or whatever it is going to be called).

Sorry..had to.

EBERRON is more of a comic book/action movie flavored setting (kind of). It's actually pretty diverse in terms of atmosphere, ranging from horror to dark and seedy, but it really emphasizes the "over-the-top" action. Also a very good setting, in my opinion.

David speaks the truth. Eberron is the only non-homebrew D&D campaign I run. It's completely awesome.

Spell Compendium is an excellent book..one of the ones I found to be EXTREMELY useful.

Ptolus: Monte Cook's City by the Spirehttp://www.ptolus.com is great stuff. You can afford it on a $200 budget, and that's one of the most amazing RPG books ever produced, IMO. With it, you have a campaign setting, several potential campaigns level 1-20 layed out, advice on running games, loads of sample dungeons and flavorul NPCs/Factions/conspiracies, all this with the most amazing production value and physical organization I've ever seen for a RPG product. That's a winner, definitely.

Here's the Ptolus FAQ

Black Leaf! Nooooooooooooo!

As you are the DM I would recommend different kinds of things.

If you use minis I'd get a good battle map or any of the other products that help you run a combat. I've seen colored magnetic pieces that can be used as status indicators: wounded, very wounded, flying, buffed, what ever you want the different colors to indicate. Steel Squire also has some cool DMing aids.

If you're like me and love to run games but have precious little time to develop a home brew then I'd look carefully at the settings. Forgotten Realms is HUGE and has little adventure support. In fact most of the major settings have little adventure support. I would look at Eberron and the quality of adventures coming out of the Xendrik Expeditions. I have no personal experience with the campaign, but it's an option to consider.

I also suggest looking at my personal favorite, Arcanis: World of Shattered Empires. If you are looking for something different enough from standard fantasy based on Western European tropes and think the movie Gladiator was awesome and enjoy the HBO series Rome, than Arcanis is the one for you. There is extensive adventure support through the RPGA (which is free to join) and a well developed world where all is not black or white, but disturbing shades of grey. It is a "Thinking Man's" campaign. Not all conflict is best resolved through combat.

Finally, I think the DMG II is a great investment for any DM. It is especially helpful to new DMs justlearning the ropes. It helps overcome many of the early mistakes many DMs make, learning through trial and error. It can't make you a good DM, it gives you the tool set to be one.

I think that's a good idea Ceresco. A battlemat would be a great idea. If you want to just spend a little bit you could get a couple of Flip-Mats from Steel Squwire. They are only about $10 each and they fold up pretty small so you can take them with you easily enough if you're not gaming at your house.

If you want to go to the pricer, premium end of the market there are Tact-Tiles. It's basically a battle mat that comes in smaller puzzle-like pieces. They are great because you can never run off the edge of the battlemat. You can just take a piece from the end and keep going. They'll set you back at least $50 though.

If you don't want to use minis, or are looking for a cheaper option, the I would also suggest the Fiery Dragon Counter Collection(s). I prefer the digital version myself so that I can print out as many copies as I need but if you don't have access to cheap or free printing the hard copy versions may be a better option for you.

I actually already have a Flipmat, got it in the mail last week (it was in the mailbox the entire session) got to use it for about 2 encounters and instantly fell in love with it. I am leaning towards Eberron, Goodman Game's CS, and Scarred Lands. I am unsure if my players like Dungeon crawls or not (haven't ran any yet *gasp*) which is the only thing keeping me from buying some DCCs.

David E: Its not that I don't want ot make my own homebrew, just as a newer DM I feel that if I get enough practice from using other adventures then when I start making my own they won't be bad. Know what I mean?

I'm not sure if 3 campaign settings would be the best way to spend your money. You can't play in more than one at a time really (unless you run multiple games). However it is your money.

I meant I narrowed my decision to three choices. I think I have decided to go with Goodman Game's. Sorry if my previous post wasn't clear enough.

Thanks everyone for your help :)
