What can a wizard do....

They're not in the PHB- missed that part of the OP-
A lot of the campaigns I play are PHB and DMG only because it keeps the game relatively simple. We recently decided were going to add the spells, feats, and classes from the PHB2 and Spell Compendium, and it has gotten so messy. LoL (I posted a thread about Avascular Mass that is worth a good read.)

Anyways, all of that is to say that I'm pretty familiar with PHB only campaigns, and that in conjunction with the contents of the OP is why you saw me be so "inefficient" as to suggest those four feats. It's worth noting that a Human Wizard at fifth level in a PHB only campaign would have acquired all four of them if he knew of their existence.

Actually, I'm usually in the same boat- only in the most recent of 3.X campaigns have any DMs in our group venture beyond the core 3 books. We were allowed to add the Completes in the last two games (no psi).

So really, it wasn't about inefficiency, it was about flex & style. My next-to-last 3.5 PC was a standard human sorcerer (battle sorcerer wasnt allowed) wearing scale mail and using a maul (non-proficiently) while spending feats on Draconic heritage & breath weapon. He doesn't cast, he breathes.

Eventually, he'll take Still Spell...but not anytime soon.

Another good way to get out of a grapple in Core: Blink. As a 3rd level spell, this is a bit earlier than DimDoor, but it can screw you over sometimes (your spells blanketing the Ethereal Plane instead of your enemies...).

Use Magic Device + Scroll of Righteous Might + scroll of Divine Power + Transformation....Your grapple check is + WHAT!?

The best way to avoid being grappled is to stay out of melee range.

Or a Ring of Freedom of Movement (40Kgp) or any of the command activated teleportation items in MiC. Dimension Stride boots are only 2Kgp for example. Those will work for casters, Ring would probably be better for those that expect themselves to be in melee and at much greater risk.
