D&D 5E What can I teach a sorcerer?

In this case, I'd use the Guild Member Background trait (he can use the guild library, etc but has to pay dues). In addition, using the downtime rules (DMG), he could learn a new skill such as Arcana, Feats such as Ritual Casting (Narrating his normal Feat selection as training), You could say he can't actually learn new spells upon leveling as normal without the downtime training with a mentor. etc.

The mages don't need to teach the sorcerer how to cast the spells because she already knows how to. But they provide her with camaraderie, a place to stay, and they tutor her how to use the spells well.

But that's just what the guild tells the naïve sorcerer. Really the guild is studying the sorcerer so they can figure out how to harness the sorcerer's metamagic. If the sorcerer tries to leave the guild they go all Misery on them and won't let them leave. Or maybe another guild catches wind of what they're up to and try to steal the sorcerer for their own selfish research.

This.

For a sorcerer, the benefits of consorting with wizards are more social than magical.

Maybe he gets a discount when he needs them to cast a spell he cannot. Or maybe he can get them to make scrolls and potions sometimes.
