I am not seeing why an unarmed trip does not draw an attack of opportunity for being unarmed. It is a trip, yes, which does not provoke, but attacking in any form unarmed (accept magic touch attacks) is still attacking unarmed which = AoO in my book.

You may want to read your book most closely. Possibly you're thinking of the section on PH p. 140, "Unarmed Attacks" -- this is specific to unarmed strikes (punching), as it says deeper in that section.

You'll also note that the various unarmed attack actions (bull rush, disarm, grapple) are forced in their description to specify that they provoke an attack of opportunity. The "trip" description does not include that specification, nor does it provoke AOO's just because it's naturally performed without a weapon.

IMC, any weapon can be use for a trip, because a hard whack on the ankle with any sturdy object will send you sprawling. A trip weapon yields a +2 bonus to the check due to being purpose built. We munch, so this may be a little too powerful.

I'll agree that the rule has always been that a weapon needs to be a "tripping weapon" (for lack of a better term, but I just recently saw a feat (or was it class ability) that allowed one to use the Improved Trip feat with a Quarterstaff, which just threw me off.
I'll try to find the source, but I'm afraid its a PrC, so I may never find the stupid thing.

Well if it is to use the improved trip its not too confusing...

Where can I find the sage answer about trip w/ or without weapons ? Personally I agree trip is a no AOO unarmed attack... but I need to convince my DM. :(
