I think the 5e Bard honestly fills in as a Jack of All Trades tradition pretty well. That said my favorite drop-in character is a Paladin. Healing and a heavy hitter. A few useful spells.

Viscous Mockery is one of the best cantrips in the game, and is bard-only. True Strike, on the other hand, is rarely usable as it take a round to cast...it's sort of like using the Help action on yourself.
I had thought about Vicious Mockery, but wasn't sure what would be most helpful in game play. Will switch it out. Thanks!

Be aware that you aren't proficient in shields (you'd have to go college of Valor at 3rd level to get shield proficiency).
Uh Oh! You're right, not sure how I didn't cath that. I will remove the shield and adjust AC. I was really tired when rolling him up...no excuse..I know. :p

I voted for bard.

You're in good company, sir. I haven't seen a landslide victory like this since someone asked what the best Defender class was on RPG.net. (The Fighter won, hands down, no questions asked.) Even that one wasn't quite as landslide as this. Almost eighty-five percent as of this post. Forget supermajority, forget three-fifths. This is more than five-sixths: the votes for Bard outnumber all other options combined almost 6:1, and the second-highest-scoring option almost 13:1.

I am rangers didn't get more votes. Stealth, tracking, and a bonus skill fir scouting, combat benefits, and better healing options plus control effects plus area damage makes them better jacks-of-all-trades than a lot of options. Like wizards. Bard still takes it.
