After some interesting comments and percentages in another poll on the Worst Roleplayed classes... how about the Better Roleplayed classes ?

Are there classes you feel are consistently played better than others ? Why are they roleplayed better ? Is it due to how easy it is to get into the character... or due to many movie/book characters available as a reference ? Or maybe just your group tends to do a good job at playing them....

Funny enough I marked Paladins as the worse and the best roleplayed myself... I have seen the best and the worse as Paladins. Rogues too.

So what classes do you feel are (usually) roleplayed better ? (multiple choices)

The one that is being played by the roleplayer. Classes have no affect on how good they are run.

Now some players can roleplay certain classes better then they can others.

Still some classes lend themselves to great roleplaying much easier than others that seem more stale.... or not ?
 

While people think barbarians are often well-played, I have rarely found this to be the case.

Fighter is the Top Dog for well-played. There are many themes and variations of what it means to be a fighter, so people really get involved -- there is the I Make Things Fall Down Go Boom fighters, the I Am Precise fighter, the I Am The Leader Of The Mercenary Band fighter, the I'm Only In It For The Money fighter, the I Am Willing To Defend All Others, But Refuse To Be Limited By The Paladin's Code fighter, the I Am A Noble Knight fighter, the I Was Raised On The Mean Streets fighter, etc. Due to the breadth of options, fighters end up being well-played; even a beginner can get out a convincing I Hit It Until It Falls Down And Then Keep Hitting It fighter... ;)

This is exactly why fighters are often the WORST roleplayers of the group. They concentrate on what they can do in combat and handwave the rest of it. At best they'll say "oh, yeah, I'm like, a mercenary or something... in it for the money.. yeah, that's it! Give me all the treasure so I can be better in combat." :P

All Classes can be roleplayed well, some just come with built in help. Fighters come with no built in help, so it actually takes more work to roleplay them. For people who are already good roleplayers they are arguably better, since they don't have as many roleplaying restrictions. However, I haven't played D&D with very many good roleplayers (I'm not terribly great myself).

This can be avoided if you give your character some background and motives other than killing and looting for kewl items. Why is your character a fighter, who did he train with, were there students who were his rivals, friends?

It is not hard to come up with background and motivations for your character and why they do things.

For example I play an archer in my current game. For her background I gave her mother who was a paladin and a noble and a father who was a blacksmith son. She wants to be like her mother but she does not have the personality to follow a paladin's strict code. So she compensates for that by trying to be more religious than even a cleric sometimes to the point that the rest of the party wished she would just shut up. It has made for some great role playing.

I think to role play well you need to look past your stats and class and if possible don't play the sterotype of the class or race.
 


I picked fighters and rogues because they are the simplest mindset to get into. I've never seen anyone do a bad job at either one.
