Bamboo spirit folk from OA makes a darned good half-elf, if I do say so myself. Heck, it could even make a darned good elf.

I think that the Human race in D&D is the weakest. It gets a bonus feat and a few extra skill points. Even the half-elf (which for some reason everyone seems to hate) gets some specials even if it does make them elf-lite.

i think what makes human such an attractive option is choice. you get to choose for yourself what the bonus feat is and what to spend the bonus skill ranks on.

i've had whole parties of players who all chose human characters because of the free feat and skill points. it's a powerful lure.

(whether that makes them quantitatively stronger than the other races i can't answer.)

And because of the extra feat, you can attain a desired objective (eg the end of a feat chain, or the prereqs for a PrC) up to 3 levels before an equivalent non-human. That's bloomin' good.

Yes, but DragonLancer, you've said before yourself that your group isn't into powergaming anyway, so your experiences regarding what's powerful and what's not are highly suspect.

Gnomes are weakest, because they're not fast enough to flee dangerous party members seeking to slaughter them for red hats and annoying voice acting.

I don't know what everyone that voted for Half-Orcs is smoking, half-orcs have pretty much rocked and rolled in every game I've ran since 3E came out. Half-Elves and Elves have pretty much disappeared though, which I simply take as karma installing a balance in the universe after AD&D. Yay.

the usefulness of h-orcs is directly proportional to how much combat you have in your games.

even so, i think it's telling to look at the differences between h-orcs and dwarves. is +2 Strength equivalent to +2 Constitution, +2 Intelligence, attack bonuses and dodge bonuses against common enemy types, multiple skill bonuses, multiple save bonuses, stonecunning, and the stability bonus? i surely wouldn't trade all that for a mere +2 Strength.
