What d20 Monster Books Have You Used?

What d20 monster books have been actively used in you games? (Meaning a creature showed up or was referenced)

For me the d20 books I have used monsters from directly in my 3.5 D&D game include:

Monster collections:
MM/srd
d20 modern srd
d20 modern srd arcana
d20 Menace Manual/srd
Denizens of Darkness
MMII
Complete Minions
Book of Beasts
Penumbra Fantasy Bestiary
Monsters of Norrath
Book of Fiends
Book of Templates
Encyclopedia of Demons and Devils

Monsters used from not straight monster collection books:
Slayer's Guide to Demons
Into the Black
Green Ronin Freeport Web enhancement
Strange Lands: Lost Tribes of the Scarred Lands
Complete Guide to Wererats
Lunar Knights
Ravenloft Campaign Setting
Draconomicon
Planeswalker.com (races)
Mythic Races (races)
Lord of the Iron Fortress
Complete Book of Eldritch Might

Maybe others

In total a small fraction of my monster books (and one up there I don't even own), though I feel I get good use out of my collection. I enjoy reading them on their own and I like having lots of options when I look to fill an adventure niche or swap out a monster in a module for a more campaign appropriate one.

Back in the ay (read, before the MM3.0 came out) I got a lot of use out of the original Creature Collection. There's something to be said about being first. Since the MM3.0 came out, the CC's use waned quite a bit, especially when we realized how damn wonky it was.

Since then, I've mostly used the MM3.0/MM3.5.

However, every once in a while, I use something nonCore.

From most used to least used:
Monster Manual II
Monster Manual III
Creature Collection II
Fiend Folio
Book of Vile Darkness
Libris Mortis
Creature Catalogue
Draconomicon
Dragon Magazine (although, once I start up my new Greyhawk campaign, the Demonomicon articles will be much used!)
Lords of Madness

Books that I haven't used but I really want to:
Monsternomicon
Denizens of Avadnu

I primarily use the Monster Manual (3.5 version), along with bits and pieces from the Tome of Horrors, Legions of Hell, the Book of Vile Darkness, and occasional conversions of my own from older sources (mostly 1E books and adventures). I use some templates from various sources to spice things up, too. I take more of a minimalist approach to critters, as PCs go up in levels many of their antagonists are classed members of the normal PC races backed by the occasional funky critter, I find that makes the encounters more interesting than a steady diet of funky critters.

  • 3.5 MM
  • Tome of Horror
  • Monsternomicon 3.5
  • Denizens of Avadnu

that's pretty much it.

Though I've got to say I'm pretty intrigued by XRP's A Magical Society: Beast Builder as well.

You might want to take a look at Denizens of Avadnu. It's one of my favorites, and doesn't have nearly the profile it deserves.

I have their epic one and I love the very good full color art. I no longer buy print books but left this one on my amazon wish list for gift ideas for family. I wish Inner Circle (the publisher) would turn the whole thing into a single big pdf instead of just the smaller breakup by CR that is slowly being released.

Funny that I don't have monsternomicon or ToH either (although ToH 3.5 is on my list to buy this month).

MM
MM2
Fiend Folio
Tome of Horrors
Draconomicon
Libris Mortis
Lords of Madness
Book of Vile Darkness
Book of Exalted Deeds
Book of Erotic Fantasy (Don't ask!)
Monsters of the Endless Dark
Monsters of the Boundless Blue

I am getting a TON of use out of XRP's Beast Builder.
Which is kind of surprising since it has NO monsters in it.
