What d20 Purchases to you Regret?

Some of the things that I've bought aren't that bad (or bad at all), but the key thing for me (primarily) is the limited or lack of use. But, of course, hindsight is always 20/20.

In hindsight, I would not have purchased:

Sword & Fist, Defenders of the Faith, Tome & Blood, Song & Silence, Masters of the Wild: With the new batches of 3.5 splat books being released, I would probably have given these books a miss. I liked some ideas in them, but i never had the time or opportunities to use them in game.

Creature Catalog 1 & 2: There were some cool monsters in these books, but nothing really grabbed my attention. Down the line, I may pick up the 3.5 Creature Catalog, but honestly, I may not need to.

Relics & Rituals: There was little from this book that really interested me for my campaign. Some of the magic items were interesting, but ultimately, I think I could hav elived without it.

Seafarer's Handbook: The basic ship info I needed is covered in the Arms & Equipment Guide.

Mythic Races:There were very few races that I was interested in using.

Kingdoms of Kalamar: My g/f was sort of interested in the setting, but all that it has done is sit on the shelf. Lot of nifty fluff in there, but since I prefer to use my homebrew setting, it turned out not to be a worthwhile purchase for me.

Savage Species:I really like the half-ogre stats in the back, & it did help me get a somewhat better grasp of ECL, but I don't particularly care for the idea of allowing monster PCs (even if they're levelled out).

HackMaster Player's Handbook: Nice mix of "blast-from-the-past" & humor when I first read through it, but it's another dust collector on my shelf.

Faiths & Pantheons: Never had a cleric of one of the deities listed in this book--pretty much could have gotten by with the FRCS deities. Plus, never used any of the PrCs, either.

Lords of Darkness: Became a dust collector for me, since I wound up creating my own groups of villains (instead of extensively using an established one, like the Zhentarim or Twisted Rune).

OTOH, I'm quite happy I purchased:

Maiden Voyage module: It's a cool module that provided me a way to keep a sea voyage interesting.

Draconomicon: Helped me out a lot with a group of 5 dragon-riding villains I was working on. Also like the other draconic materials provided (like dragonbone & dragonfang).

Dragon and Dungeon subscriptions: Love the Maps of Mystery (the continent one by C. West is the world map for my homebrew setting), the Critical Threats, Dungeoncraft articles, & lots of other interesting stuff. And, I can't forget to mention Nodwick, either.

Wow. Really? That'd be the first time I'd ever heard of anyone disliking the Manual of the Planes, which I generally hear referred to as (and concur) that it's one of the best or THE best book WotC's released other than the core three.
what i was hoping for when i bought MotP was a toolkit for creating my own cosmology. what i got was an extended gazetteer of the "Great Wheel." i have no interest in the Great Wheel, so the book wasn't very useful to me.

i did like the templates and some of the monsters, but that chapter (and the small section on planar traits) are the only parts of the book that i can use.

i'm afraid the upcoming 3.5e planes book from WOTC is going to be more of the same, Great Wheel-centric, so i doubt i'll be picking up that one either.

Let's see, I regret buying...

Relics and Rituals I. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but I've yet to use anything out of it.

Oriental Adventures and the Rokugan main book and all of the soft cover suppliments. Great stuff, but I never found anyone who wanted to play it. My money could have been much better spent elsewhere.

On a related note, Jade and Steel. Of all my d20 purchaces, this is the one I feel was my biggest mistake.

Traps and Treachery I and II. At first glance they had all the charm of the old Grimtooth's books, but I've never actually made use of anything in either volume.

Seafarers Handbook. *shrug*

Spells and Spellcraft. Maybe it was a case of gamer goggles. It sure looked good in the store, but when you wake up to it the next moring, it doesn't look nearly as good. Metaphorically speaking of course. :p

Psionics Handbook. Well, in previous editions psionics was wacky, unbalanced and pretty darn wonky, but they'll get it right this time ...

Greyhawk Gazateer. So then this new Third Edition thing came out and Greyhawk was going to be the default setting, so it would get all sorts of product support and this was the first book in a series of amazing updated material and ...um...uh...nevermind.

Deities and Demigods. I'll take the Fifth on that one.

Even though I have a selection of books I wish I hadn't bought, I have a far larger list of d20 material that I am very happy I bought.

Heehee!

I'm sure this thread will hurt more feelings that just yours, Nighty!

Gotta have thick skin to be a designer/hardcore fanboy in this internet age of ours.
Or a shot gun to take down the rest. Either works I guess.

Books I have gotten no use from:
Lord of the Rings by Decipher (Very pretty, but fatally flawed...I am not buying the revised edition)

Shadowforce Archer (Not my cup of tea...)

Dynasties & Demagogues (Another cup of wasted tea...)

Books that have gotten me all giddy inside:

Arcana Unearthed (Won't use Diamond Throne, though...)

Buffy tVS (Way cool...Even if MEG Hal has never seen an episode)

Midnight (Unfortunately, gameplay was less giddiness. I might try to give it another go...)

d20 CoC (My all-time favorite game. Well-done too...)

Monsternomicon (Made me run a short IK campaign and want to run a long one...)

Crucible of Freya (It was the first D&D I had played in 6 years...)

Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil (Got to run some of this and I love the sheer size...)

Banewarrens (Same as above...)

I won't ask people to forgive my ire here. I get enough of it else where. So what I will say is grow up people. If you can design better books in the time alotted AND STILL manage a personal life, then do so. Step up and put your money where your mouth is. My point is S&SS might have ups and down but what REALLY sickens me is the amount of bashing I see on mechanics just because people THINK they can do better. I congradulate the freelancers, the authors and the developers, not just of WW, S&SS and it affiliates but ALL d20 products who put their necks out there than try some time. Until I see that from others, I just say keep quiet.
Just because you like it doesn't mean it is good :) And of course, it *ought* to go without saying that just because I have a job or a family or no talent or whatever, doesn't mean I can't spot other people's crappy work for what it is.

Well to address the Scarred lands issue someone brought up: for my own part I happened to really like the original Scarred Lands gaz..it was one of those cool bare bones products that gave lots of ideas for me to flesh out and the value for the $ was great. It was like the original Greyhawk folio in spirit. When I bought the hardcover, I found out I didn't care for the way SSS had fleshed out the setting in pretty much any way, shape, or form :shug:

I also don't like the typical WW "need 3 more books of ours to use the book you just bought" tactic, which is also a problem w/ Ravenloft. BIG pet peeve of mine.

No offense Nightfall :)

A Proposition

Hello all,

I've got an idea, hairbrained probably. How 'bout a thread is started in Marketplace forum titled 'Stuff I Regret Buying'. You post the stuff you'd like to sell, at say 5-10 dollars plus shipping. Why so inexpensive you ask? Well, I noticed that we're a diverse bunch but many of us are rather short on funds, being after the holiday's and all. I've seen stuff I'd like to purchase and we are a big loveable community and all.

Crothian says he finds good homes for the games he don't want. So follow his example and post them in the marketplace. Use the money to buy books you do want.

What say you.

That's a really really good idea. Maybe people could straight out trade for stuff, too.
