This brings me back to playing Socom 2 with my clan. There was this guy who would always wacth porn while playing....not not did it make him suck...you could hear it every time he spoke on his mic.

Seriously, I ran campaigns for years that predated pretty much all the tools now available - and 4e is supposed to be simplified from earlier editions. It's quite doable with mIRC, AIM, or anything where you can send and receive text.
Not trying to be unhelpful - just want to point out that there isn't much that you NEED, so you should not let that stand in the way. If the question is what you "may want" or "may benefit from," the list grows.
