What Do You Call This Popular Beverage?

Until proven otherwise, I would say it's a Coke.

Looks like Coke, which is a type of soda. If I wanted a root beer or something else that color with the fizz in it, I would ask for that. I'm even glad when I go to a restaurant and I ask for a Coke and they say, "Pepsi OK", meaning that they only sell that brand's product line. I might change my mind since I want a Coke, which is not the same.

Also, in other parts of the world, "soda" can be much more interesting. I saw one like this just yesterday (except it was more of a blue color):

Cola when speaking German, Coke or Coka Cola when speaking Englisch (my accent will betray me as a foreigner either way ).

Different ratios of ingredients. I think Coke has more of a caramel flavor.

Oh, and soda. Unless it's actually Coke. Or better yet, Diet Coke.

I voted "soda" because that was the generic term for sugary carbonated beverages when I was growing up in the Philly suburbs in the 80s and 90s. My dad is from the midwest and would sometimes refer to it as "pop", though. These days, I generally just use brand names.

Here in NZ, the most common generic term would be "fizzy" or "fizzy drink". That being said, lemon-lime drinks like Sprite and 7-Up are referred to as "lemonade" -- which of course means something different for me! Took me a while to get used to that.
