Where I'm from, someone will ask you if you want a coke, and if you say yes, they'll ask which kind.

My grandfather would call them dopes, because growing up they were a special treat you'd get at the drug store.

My wife calls them sugary drinks.

Pepsi is a bit sweeter.
Yeah. I can't stand Coke as it's too bitter and always prefered Pepsi. I was probably one of the few people who preferred New Coke over Coke Classic. I stopped drinking all cola about 10 years ago as out of nowhere I started getting a strange bitter after taste from drinking it. I can drink any other flavor of pop so Im assuming my taste buds just changed. Maybe I'll grab a bottle and see if still has the same effect.

I hate all fizzy sugar waters except a ginger ale or soda water. Taught my baby son that coke was evil :)

I'll tolerate lemonade if I need to but would rather drink milk or water, even juice is too sweet for me

I dont generally drink much pop or keep it in the house unless they have 5 for $5 2-liters, which they do every so often. But at almost $3 a bottle now I buy it even less.

I'll buy the powdered lemonade or Gatorade mix so I can make it so it's not so tart. Milk I can't stand. Except a glass of chocolate milk every few years, I probably haven't had a glass of milk in 40 years. I use it for coffee, cereal or cooking, but I can't drink it straight.

What do you call this?

If I know what it is, I will probably call it what it is.

If I'm not sure what it is, but am thinking about possibly drinking it, I am likely to ask if it is coke or say something like, "what type of cola is that?" but I will certainly not refer to it as coke unless I have reason to believe it actually is.

If I need to refer to sweet, fizzy drinks generally, I will most likely call use the term "softdrink".
