There is only one word you need know for Rangers.

I use the variant "combat styles" in Wildscape (some of them not so combative). They give the ranger a ton of design latitude. They also give you variants for trading in your spellcasting ability for extending your combat style, if that's the way you want to go.
Then I kick all those "wannabe" ranger variants like scout to the curb.
Nice. Flexible. Tidy. Done.
