... when players make up rules you don't like and that are totally unbalancing and won't listen when you say they can't have, and when you DO manage to even the odds, they still refuse? I'm thinking specifically of one player I know who owns a variety of knives...

Alright - let me ask you this. You're DMing, right? And they won't do as you say? (rule wise, that is. I'm not advocating complete DM supremacy... yet. ) They tend to just ignore it?

If that's the case, try this... tell one of them to DM. Let them try it for a while. Now, some might say to pull the same thing, but I'd say to play well. They'll probably get it from the other players, and appreciate that you're accepting their authority - and then they'll be on your side.

Now, if you're saying, specifically, that you're worried about one of the players, who 'owns a variety of knives' there is a much bigger problem...

I have one player that likes to make up rules, and he cheats like mad.

Luckily we play at my house and I glace at my flail or one of my stupid sharp swords and he shuts up.

Just make sure that you are quicker to draw a weapon than he is.
