what do you do

I'm 33, happily married with two young children (a 3-year old boy and an 11-month old boy). We also have an incredibly agile Corgie/German sheppard dog named Thor who demands as much attention as the kids.

My official title is the manager of administrative system and technology support services. I basically do two jobs. I manage our IT helpdesk making sure stuff gets resolved timely and also manage the group that maintains a lot of our back office software (like our HR, Accounting, timekeeping, expense reporting systems). I work for a survey research company affiliated with the University of Chicago. We mostly do surveys to collect data for the government.

Let's see, single male, 34, I am both the IT Department and a Research Associate for the small marketing research company I work for, because, really, there's no such thing as having just one job in a company of 10 people. Despite the fact that I'm the tech guy, my training is in art, with a BFA in painting.

Gaming, reading, drawing and playing with the cat are the primary pastimes.

I find it interesting that the last two posters both work for market research organizations.

Before I went into advertising, I worked in market research for a decade. You can blame me for the lady who stopped you in a shopping mall in 1994, wanting to ask you questions about deodorant. :D

ah HA! I was SAFE from your depredations! I haven't walked into a mall since ... since ... :\

Hmm.... :uhoh:

I can't even reMEMber when I was last in a mall. :heh:

Good to know...I'm sure one of the wronged will develop a suitable revenge. chuckle

We've rarely done intercept interviewing, unless it was the only way to get the respondents (mass transit passengers, visitors to a specific event, etc). We've always focused on phone surveys, with mail and online surveys being adjuncts to that, with online becoming more common despite it's often less representative sample.

Yeah, there's really no such thing as representative sampling anymore (if there ever was).

- Malls were very popular for research at one point, but an awful lot of people don't go to malls anymore
- Many people screen their calls
- Not everyone is online, and not all of those who are are willing to take a survey

So, you're left with deciding which is the lesser evil. :)

Threadjack over, I think.

Pretty much, on all counts. chuckle

I was expecting the next line to be "but as a gamer I don't use deodorant"

;)

But this answer is also acceptable. :p

I just had to gape in surprise and say that The One Warlock is officially the second person I've seen online whose profile notes they're also from Western MA in the ten years I've been online myself. And a gamer to boot! I didn't think any more of us existed here. ;)

(Why I didn't notice this until now, I dunno... maybe the fact that this is a "What do you do?" thread got me in that mindset...)

Peace & Luv, Liz
