What do you prefer (DM/Player/Mixture)

What do you prefer to do....

I prefer being DM.

I have realized that I only like being a player if the DM is really good at running a game that fits my style. I prefer the PC to be more personal to me, if he's not, I don't get into playing him much. If I don't care about my PC much, the game is more like a board game that is fun every once in awhile but not on a regular basis. It's hard finding new DMs that fit my style as a player because they are either too rules lawyery, too powergamish (even if it's in my favor), too silly, or they just run a dull game. Some DM's are fun to play with, just not on a regular basis.

Wow, that describes me exactly, only in a way much better than I would have done.

I much prefer to be DM.

The only reason I play on occasion is to gain better insight on what makes the game from a player's perspective.

I originally wanted to be a player. Nobody else wanted to DM, and I happened to have a fair amount of talent for it, and making 'stuff' (plots, enemies, traps, maps, etc.) really appealed to me.

So, for a long time, I've been the DM/GM/Narrator. I've enjoyed it, and I've gotten better with every session.

However, I just started a new Star Wars game with a somewhat...unorthodox configuration that I enjoy quite a bit...

You see, a new person joined my group (and old friend who was always involved in other games up until now), and he's got very similar tastes and sensibilities to my own...

For this new campaign, both of us wanted to play, and knew that the other people wouldn't want to GM, so we came up with an idea; we alternate GMing. One week, I'm GM, then the next it's him, then me again, and so on, sometimes having one of us GM longer for longer adventures.

It is truly awesome; I get to play my kick-ass Jedi half of the time, and I get to throw truly despicable darksiders at the group the other half of the time. It's just, well, fun.

From Red Box to 3E - I never played just DMed.
Since 3E I have done both and I like it that way.
I just played for a while after the new edition but then I decided I really like to do both so I started up my own again.

I fall in the unfortunate, DMs because no one else will, category. I don't delude myself into thinking I have any real aptitude for it. If I were able to get experience under some other DMs I would probably improve, but it's hard to do in a vacuum. I recently moved and joined a new group. I started out playing, but within 3 sessions, the then current DM resigned and nominated me DM.:\

In both of my main groups (3.5e Freeport and M&M) we round robin the GM's roll.

One person will GM for about 4-6 sessions, then someone else will pick up the baton.

It's been working really well for us, and I have no desire to go back.

I've played far too often under bad DMs, I'm afraid to do anything but DM anymore.
Yup. Like Oryan77 and ElvishBard, I would really like to play, but I just can't find a DM to suit my needs as a player. They're either, too cheesy, "monty haul", or else "Vs.-the-Players" type, or just not the kind of person with whom I'm interested in spending time socially, or "doesn't actually want to DM," or "lives two states away." There are plenty of bad DMs for plaenty of reasons, but I know that as long as I DM, there will always be something in the game for me and that my group will enjoy the game.
