My players just don't upgrade their weapons. Not intentionally, just that they all are incredibly impatient.
They Whine and Moan about how long it takes to enchant something. But the PCs put up with it for about a week of game time. Then 2 or 3 of the fighting types go off on a side quest. Not wanting to get left behind, within about a day the whole party is now on this side quest. Even the Weapon Enchanters stop working and go on the side quest because they got sick of being sidelined. So then the main campaign gets put on hold for a while. Then one day the party runs into a pair of wraiths. No one has any magic weapons, the Wizard runs out of magic missles, Many PCs die, and the rest run away. By this point they have fogotten the main quest. The princess is forced to mary evil duke monkeybutter, and the land is covered in darkness. yada yada yada. The players then complain to the DM that they were not given enough time to make the magic weapons.
Happens every time.
