What exactly is in a thieves tool kit?

Great minds think alike I guess.
"damaged minds run in the same ruts."

Many different kinds of papers and ink, and wax for making impressions.

Are there any magic thieves tools? Like a "rod of variable viscosity"? You know, make it a liquid, put it in a lock, turn it solid, viola, a key.

I asked this question here and a great response from Cthulhu's Librarian pointed me to How Things Work which was extremely
helpful ---- I've used it many times describing to the party thief how tough a
lock was, when (and why) a wrench broke, etc.

Aurora's Whole Realms Catalog for 2nd Edition had three separate toolkits, the Hinge-Removing Set, Keymaking Set and Lockpicks, all three together would make good masterwork thieves tools, and the book described and illustrated their contents in great details.

What was in all three kits combined:
Wax pad for making impressions of keys
Stylus for marking metal key blanks
Blades and Files for cutting keys
Blank keys
Skeleton keys
Miscellaneous wires, rods and angled wrenches of various sizes.
Funnel
Magnifying glass
Hammers in a variety of sizes
Pliers
Small hand drill
Awl
C-Clamps
Vials of oils
Vials of acid
Set of chisels
Listening cone
Toolbelt, cases and pouches to hold it all

Is that a large thing to carry around? I also wonder how breakable it is? Add to it the inevitable fights and clanging swords, it would seem to be a hinderance to the theif.

Wow. I forgot about that page. :heh: Score one for my library reference desk work.

Hmm, carrying a few vials of acid and oil in a thieves kit is no different than all the potions and alchemy PC's carry around, or the exotic and possibly fragile or volatile components a wizard carries in his spell pouch. A magnifying glass also doesn't need to be particularly big. In both of those cases the actual compartment can be padded if needed. A funnel need not be large, it's mainly there just to have a precise place to pour the oil/acid, so it need only be about as widemouthed as the vials, The larger hammers may be a little big, but they still are "kit" scale. A hand drill might be a little large, but no larger than all the other various things PC's often find themselves toting around.

In all, I'd expect masterwork thieves tools to be something on the scale of something you wear as a toolbelt, or maybe a small backpack (or a large compartment in a larger backpack). Just a little pouch or box of lockpicks and maybe a few small hand tools would be a regular thieves kit.
